Aerion, Boom urge DOT to revise proposed supersonic standards
The leading US developers of supersonic aircraft called on the Department of Transportation (DOT) Aug. 27 to modify its proposed rule on supersonic flight authorizations, arguing the proposal’s wording amounts to an effective prohibition on all supersonic flight.
The comments came in response to DOT’s June 28 notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) to streamline the application process for supersonic flight authorizations.

Irkut MC-21 gets 20 commitments at MAKS Air Show
The Irkut MC-21 received 20 new commitments at this week’s MAKS 2019 Air Show, which is taking place this week in Zhukovsky near Moscow. Russia’s regional airline Yakutia signed a preliminary agreement for five aircraft while Kazakhstan’s Bek Air opted for 10, Irkut Corp. CEO Ravil Khakimov said. He did not disclose the customer for the other five aircraft. This increases the total number of MC-21 commitments to 170 while firm orders remain at 175 aircraft.

Russian-built MC-21 composites undergo testing
Testing of domestically produced composites for the Irkut MC-21 is under way in Russia.
"Early-stage trials of advanced samples is already being conducted by [state nuclear energy corporation] Rosatom," says Irkut's general designer Oleg Demchenko. "It should be completed by year-end."

MAKS: Irkut shows off MC-21 interior in video
Russian airframer Irkut has shown off the cabin of its MC-21-300 during the MAKS Moscow air show.
The manufacturer has been flying the initial test aircraft – which conducted the maiden flight on 28 May 2017 – during the show.

Rolls-Royce, Widerøe partner on zero emissions aviation
Rolls-Royce and Widerøe are teaming up to research zero emission aviation as the Scandinavian regional airline aims for an all-electric fleet, in parallel with the Norwegian government’s goal of zero emission domestic flights by 2040. The partners are developing an electric aviation concept and the initial stage of the progam, involving operational studies and concept proofing, is underway.

CAAC report gives no cause of Air China A330 fire
A fire that severely damaged an Air China Airbus A330-300 during boarding at Beijing Capital International Airport Aug. 27 was brought under control 57 min. after discovery, according to details of the incident issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
An airport firefighting team arrived at the aircraft 6 min. after the fire was detected and the flight crew issued a “mayday” declaration, according to the CAAC’s summation of events.

Korean Air changes economy check-in to self-service
Korean Air is transitioning its economy check-in procedures to self-service options at South Korean airports, including the two Seoul hubs.
The carrier intends to convert all its economy class check-in counters at domestic airports to bag drop counters for passengers that check in using mobile, web or airport kiosk options. The changes will occur by Sept. 1.

SAS sees 3Q net income down 26% on higher fuel costs, pilot strike
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) reported a net income of SEK1.16 billion ($122 million) for the third quarter (May-July), down 26% from SEK1.57 billion in the year-ago period.
SAS president & CEO Rickard Gustafson said the “disappointing” 3Q results were mainly attributed to increased fuel costs, the Swedish krona’s continued weakness against the US dollar, and pilot strikes at the beginning of the quarter.

Spanish pilot union calls five-day Ryanair strike
Ryanair is facing intensified industrial action in Spain as the SEPLA pilot union has announced strike dates for 19, 20, 22, 27 and 29 September.
Around 900 pilots will be invited to walk out in protest at the closures of Ryanair bases in Lanzarote, Tenerefe, Las Palmas and Girona, eliminating a total of 120 jobs.

MAKS: Azimuth to lease another pair of Superjets
Russian operator Azimuth has agreed a further lease deal with state lessor GTLK under which the carrier will acquire two more Sukhoi Superjet 100s.
The agreement was disclosed during the MAKS Moscow air show.

MAKS: Polar Airlines seeks to be Il-114-300 launch operator
Siberian operator Polar Airlines has provisionally signed to acquire three Ilyushin Il-114-300 turboprops, for delivery starting in 2023.
Production of the Il-114 is being restarted following development of the -300, a modernised version of the regional aircraft.

Fire-damaged Air China A330 moved to remote stand
Images circulating on social media indicate that the Air China Airbus A330-300 badly damaged during a ground fire at Beijing Capital airport has been moved to a remote stand and de-identified.
The aircraft's crew were initially alerted to the fire at 16:48 on 27 August, almost 15min after passengers started boarding for the CA183 service to Tokyo Haneda.

MAKS: Yakutia among three carriers to sign for MC-21
Russian operator Yakutia has signed a tentative agreement to acquire five Irkut MC-21-300s, with two other carriers also reaching preliminary deals for the twinjet type.
Kazakhstan's Bek Air is looking to take 10 aircraft while another five will provisionally go to an unidentified customer.

Environmentalists to fly drones near Heathrow to protest expansion
Climate-campaign group Heathrow Pause is planning to fly toy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), more commonly known as drones, within London Heathrow Airport’s exclusion zone “from Sept. 13” with the aim of keeping flights grounded.
The objective is to highlight the “incompatibility” between the UK government’s commitment to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050 and Heathrow’s expansion plans.

Gatwick seeking planning permission to use existing standby runway
Gatwick Airport has formally started the process to bring its existing Northern Runway into routine use by submitting a notice to the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) of its intention to prepare an application for development consent.
This action establishes the ‘Gatwick Airport Northern Runway’ project on the PINS website and is the first step in the Development Consent Order (DCO) application process.

NR investments completes acquisition of Chisinau airport operator
Channel Islands based investment vehicle, NR Investments Ltd, has effectively completed the purchase of the operator of Moldova’s Chisinau International Airport.
It now owns Cyprus-incorporated Komaksavia Airport Invest Ltd, which holds a 95% stake in Chisinau International Airport concessionaire and operator, Avia Invest SRL.
