Boeing: MAX fixes likely to take until at least September
Boeing will need at least until September to address a new flight control computer (FCC) issue and wrap up changes needed to get the fleet flying again, ATW  has learned.
The issue came to light during engineering simulator tests with FAA test pilots during the week of June 17. During a runaway horizontal stabilizer troubleshooting procedure, FAA determined that line pilots would need more time to correctly diagnose the failure and execute the appropriate checklist.

FAA certificates Gulfstream G600
The Federal Aviation Administration has certificated Gulfstream Aerospace's 19-passenger G600 business jet, clearing the path for first delivery later this year.
The FAA granted both the aircraft's type certificate and a production certificate, says Gulfstream.

Melted window grounds a 787
Turkish Airlines took delivery of its first 787-9 last week with plans to press the aircraft into service on domestic flights before expanding to international operations mid-July. Those flights might face some challenges as the first aircraft was damaged on the ground in Istanbul after delivery.

FIERY CRASH Russia plane crash – Pilot and technician killed but 43 passengers and crew miraculously survive as plane explodes in flames and crashes in sewage works
THE captain and an aircraft technician were killed but 43 passengers and crew miraculously survived when a plane crashed and burst into flames today in Russia.
Survivors said they were given no warning of an emergency landing and panicking passengers “jostled” to escape as the plane was engulfed in smoke and flames.

Lufthansa Cargo considers early retirement of MD-11F fleet
Lufthansa Cargo is seriously evaluating a much speedier retirement of its remaining MD-11F fleet, the company confirmed. The airline has entered talks with its unions to agree on terms that would allow it to phase out the 12 freighters in 2020, up to five years earlier than the previously planned departure of its last MD-11. The airline had so far planned to phase out the fleet between now and 2025.

Icelandair brings in more capacity for grounded MAXs
Icelandair is bringing in Bombardier Q400 aircraft from one of its sister companies as it continues to try to offset problems arising from the grounding of its Boeing 737 MAX fleet.
The Icelandic flag carrier has three MAX 8s in its inventory and has three more on order, together with six MAX 9s.

Air France to swap on-order 787s for KLM's A350s
Air France is to exchange six Boeing 787s it has on order for Airbus A350s set to be delivered to KLM, as part of a fleet optimisation drive.
The French carrier says it will swap the six 787s – with deliveries scheduled in the 2021-23 timeframe – for seven A350s its Dutch sister carrier has on order.

IAG firms another two A320neo options for Iberia
European airline group IAG has disclosed its conversion of two more Airbus A320neo options into firm orders for Iberia.
The two options are from the 100 that IAG took in August 2013. As part of that deal, it also placed firm orders on behalf of its other Spanish unit, Vueling, for 30 A320ceos and 32 A320neos, taking 58 options for use by that carrier. The further 100 options could be used by British Airways, Iberia or Vueling, the group specified at the time.

PICTURE: China Southern receives first A350
China Southern Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350.
The widebody, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines, will initially be operated by the carrier on domestic routes, such as those from Guangzhou to Beijing and Shanghai. International deployments will follow later.

The first Lion Air Airbus A330-900 made its maiden flight on 27 June.
The jet (MSN 1926) took off from Toulouse Blagnac International airport at 10:54 local time on a 4h 20min test flight mission, and landed at 15:14 local time, data from FlightRadar24 shows.

Financial authority orders Garuda to restate 2018 results
Garuda Indonesia was ordered by the country's Financial Services Authority (OJK) to restate its 2018 financial statement, after questions were raised over the way it booked future revenue from an inflight wi-fi and entertainment deal as an operating item.
The OJK says Garuda will have to submit a restated financial report within 14 days, as it was not compliant with the Indonesian accounting standards.

United to double San Francisco-Hong Kong frequency
United Airlines will double its San Francisco-Hong Kong service to twice daily on 26 October.
The Star Alliance member will deploy Boeing 777-200ERs on the second daily flight.

Dubai airport rethinks operations on Emirates Airline’s fleet changes
Emirates Airline’s substantial fleet changes will have a major impact on how its home base, Dubai International Airport (DXB), will operate in the future, DXB CEO Paul Griffiths says. “[The decision] puts more pressure on the capacity elements of airports and air traffic control, but it is also an opportunity,” Griffiths told ATW. Melbourne airport rethinks third runway direction
Melbourne Tullamarine airport is extending its consultation period on its proposed third runway until the end of the year as it mulls switching it from an east-west orientation to north-south.
Plans dating back to the 1960s call for the long-term development of four runways at Tullamarine, and since the 1990s the configuration has been for a "double parallel 'hashtag'" layout, the airport says.
