PARIS 2019 BLOG: The significance of the A321XLR’s long legs
Day three of the air show was a good one for Airbus and particularly its newly-launched A321XLR, which is demonstrating early on that airlines see how they can stretch their networks, enter new markets and do good business with a longer-legged narrowbody.
Big XLR orders or commitments today came from American Airlines (50), Indigo Partners (50) and Qantas (36). Not all of these were entirely new—some were switches from other A320neo family orders and options.

PARIS 2019: Mitsubishi has potential launch customer for M100
Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. has an MOU for 15 SpaceJet M100s from an identified North American customer—the first orders or commitments for the newly revealed type.
The MOU, announced June 19, clears the way for “formal negotiations” to begin for a firm order that would see deliveries begin in 2024.

PARIS 2019: First flight of Boom supersonic demonstrator pushed to 2020
Supersonic airliner developer Boom Supersonic has slipped the first flight of its XB-1 high-speed demonstrator to 2020, but says the follow-on full-size airliner is on track to make its service debut in the 2025-2027 timeframe.
The XB-1, a one-third-scale demonstrator for the company’s proposed 55-seat, Mach 2.2 Overture supersonic airliner, will be rolled out of Boom’s Colorado facility in December before starting flight tests in Mojave, California, early next year.

PARIS 2019: EU-ASEAN air transport pact nears completion
A comprehensive air transport agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is nearing completion—a deal that could provide a significant boost to air traffic and connect a combined population of 1.2 billion people.
Thirty-seven of the 38 countries involved are already in agreement, European Commission DG for mobility and transport Henrik Hololei told ATW at the Paris Air Show, adding that an Open Skies deal was now a matter of “when” rather than “if.”

​PARIS: Boeing should rename 737 Max – Qatar chief
Qatar Airways group chief executive Akbar Al Baker expects that Boeing will need to rename the 737 Max after the damage done to its brand reputation in the wake of the grounding that followed two fatal accidents within five months.
The Qatari carrier has placed orders for 20 Max 8s, of which five have been delivered to Air Italy, in which it holds a 49% stake.

Four men charged with MH17 Boeing 777 shoot down
Four men, including an alleged former Russian intelligence service colonel, have been charged with bringing the missile into Ukraine that shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014, killing all those onboard the Boeing 777-200.
In a press conference June 19, the Dutch-led crash joint investigation team (JIT) named the men as Russians Igor Girkin, Sergei Dubinsky and Oleg Pulatov and Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko.

PARIS 2019: KLM Cityhopper signs for up to 35 Embraer E195-E2s
KLM Cityhopper signed a $2.5 billion deal with Embraer for 15 firm Embraer E195-E2 aircraft plus 20 purchase rights.
KLM president and CEO Pieter Elbers said, “Embraer has been a key partner for KLM and Cityhopper over the past 10 years. Our customers appreciate the E190 and E175s. The E2 will be a welcome addition to the KLM fleet, giving us greater capacity flexibility and it will help to manage down costs. In addition, the environmentally friendly E195-E2 also supports our sustainability goals with lower levels of noise and emissions.”

PARIS 2019: Norwegian seeks Asia, US feeder partners
LCC Norwegian is on the lookout for feeder partnerships in Asia and the US, similar to the connections agreement it has with LCC easyJet in Europe.
The European market is currently “flat,” Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos said at the Paris Air Show, but the Nordic market is “not that affected.” Meanwhile, demand for long-haul flights, including the transatlantic market, is improving.

PARIS 2019: American Airlines to acquire 50 A321XLRs
American Airlines will acquire 50 Airbus A321XLRs, adding 20 new aircraft to an order of 30 A321neos that have been converted to the new long-range narrowbody.
The airline plans to take eight aircraft in 2023, 22 in 2024 and 20 in 2025, and is likely to use them throughout its network on a variety of routes.

PARIS 2019: French Bee to add new destination as A350 fleet grows
Paris-based long-haul LCC French Bee plans to announce a new destination as it continues to grow its fleet of Airbus A350s.
“In the coming weeks we’ll be announcing a new route for the A350-900 that will join our fleet in June 2020,” managing director Muriel Assouline told ATW at the Paris Air Show.

PARIS 2019: Norwegian CEO has no plans to change MAX order
Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos plans to maintain his airline’s order for over 100 Boeing 737 MAXs, despite the type’s ongoing grounding.
The Scandinavian LCC has already received 18 MAXs, making it Europe’s largest operator of the type.

PARIS 2019: AirBaltic sees A321XLR as ideal for transatlantic flights
AirBaltic CEO Martin Gauss sees the newly launched Airbus A321XLR as an ideal aircraft for transatlantic operations from the airline’s Baltic home market, although airBaltic’s own short-haul focus remains unchanged.
Airbus launched the A321XLR on the first day of the 2019 Paris Air Show, attracting orders and conversions from several customers, including Air Lease Corp., Philippine LCC Cebu Pacific, Indigo Partners, International Airlines Group (IAG) and Australian flag carrier Qantas.

PARIS 2019: Turkmenistan Airlines commits to fourth 777-200LR
Turkmenistan Airlines has signed a commitment to add a fourth Boeing 777-200LR to its fleet as it seeks to grow its international network.
The aircraft is the right model to help the carrier “grow its international operations in Europe, Asia and beyond,” Boeing SVP-commercial sales and marketing Ihssane Mounir said at the Paris Air Show.

PARIS 2019: Amazon to lease 15 737-800 freighters from GECAS
Amazon is adding 15 more Boeing 737-800 freighters to its network following a deal with GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), paving the way to expand its fleet to at least 70 aircraft, including 20 GECAS-provided 737s.
“These new aircraft create additional capacity for Amazon Air, building on the investment in our Prime Free One-Day program,” Amazon SVP-worldwide operations Dave Clark said.

PARIS: Qatar expects A380 fleet retirement from 2024
Qatar Airways' Airbus A380s are set for an early retirement, as the airline expects to begin phasing out the fleet from 2024.
"We feel that the aircraft does not have very long future in Qatar Airways' fleet," says group chief executive Akbar Al Baker.

PARIS: KLM joins E2 customer list
KLM has committed to taking up to 35 Embraer 195-E2 jets for its Cityhopper regional unit, completing a multi-year campaign for a new aircraft.
The Dutch carrier has signed a letter of intent covering 15 firm E195-E2s plus purchase rights for another 20, in a deal worth $2.48 billion at list prices. Deliveries of the firm aircraft will run from 2021 through 2023.

PARIS: Modified exit doors key to 460-seat Cebu A330neos
Airbus has indicated that the 460-seat layout for the Cebu Pacific A330-900s will involve a door modification in order to achieve exit limits.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency's type certificate for the aircraft shows that it is approved for a maximum seating capacity of 440.

Drone sightings disrupt flights at Singapore’s Changi airport
Singapore Changi Airport closed one of two runways for 10 hours after a drone was sighted in the vicinity on the night of June 18 through the morning of June 19.
As a precautionary measure, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) closed runway 20R, which affected the delay of 37 departures and arrivals, including one that was diverted to Kuala Lumpur.
