Embraer’s E195-E2 receives type certification
Brazilian airframer Embraer has achieved type certification for its E195-E2 jet and remains on track for the aircraft to enter service with Azul in the second half of 2019.
Three regulatory agencies – those of Brazil, Europe and the USA – certified the jet, which is the largest commercial aircraft produced by a Brazilian company, says Embraer president of commercial aircraft John Slattery.

Embraer-Boeing deal advances at regulators’ pace: Slattery
Embraer and Boeing continue to progress toward closing proposed joint ventures, with a top executive describing the regulatory approval process as time-consuming but on track.
“All teams are fully focused on securing regulatory approval from the antitrust authorities around the world,” Embraer’s president of commercial aircraft John Slattery tells FlightGlobal. “We have to respect the authorities… and the timeline that they dictate for us.”

Airbus has carried out the first flight of its second BelugaXL high-capacity transport, the modified A330-based aircraft set to replace the A300-600ST.
It took off from Toulouse at around 10:15 on 15 April, for a flight lasting around 5h 30min.

ST Engineering has been given the green light by regulators in the United States to acquire GE Aviation’s nacelle unit.
The Singapore group said in a statement on Sunday (April 14) afternoon that the acquisition of Middle River Aircraft Systems (MRAS) will close in the week beginning April 15.

American extends Boeing MAX ops freeze through mid-August
American Airlines has further extended its cancellations of Boeing 737 MAX 8 operations through Aug. 19, the airline announced Sunday.
The announcement follows a similar decision by Southwest Airlines, which announced April 12 that it had changed its schedule through Aug. 5 to account for not putting its 34 MAXs back into service before then.

Asiana’s largest stakeholder looks to exit
Asiana Airlines’ largest stakeholder, Kumho Industrial, has decided to sell its entire stake in the South Korean airline as it seeks to improve its liquidity and appease creditors. Kumho, which owns about 33% of Asiana, announced its intention in a stock exchange filing April 15. However, the date of the sale and the price have not yet been determined. Asiana has been in crisis mode in recent months as it attempts to improve its financial stability.

Jet Airways still seeking emergency funds
Indian carrier Jet Airways has been rebuffed in its latest attempt to secure emergency funds that would allow it to resume more flights. The airline met with creditors April 15 to gain access to emergency funds earmarked in a previous bailout plan. However, in a note to employees the airline said the interim funding it was seeking had yet to be granted. Jet Airways said it will hold a board meeting April 16 to discuss its negotiations with the creditors and other matters.

Alitalia unions threaten more action as deadlines loom
Alitalia unions said they were ready to take action to protest the delay in presenting a new business strategy for Alitalia even as the Italian government said there would be good news soon about the airline.  Alitalia declared bankruptcy in May 2017, kicking off a long process to find an industrial partner. Italian railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) and Delta Air Lines have indicated their interest,  but nothing has been finalized.

IrAero develops Kazakhstan routes from Moscow
Russia´s IrAero Airline is developing its network to Kazakhstan cities from Moscow Zhukovsky. The carrier will launch 3X-weekly Karaganda service, as well as 1X-weekly Kokshetau and Petropavlovsk flights. The services will start at the end of May and will be operated with Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft. In March, the Irkutsk region announced plans to acquire IrAero, which is based in the city airport, and to develop it together with Ramport Aero, which operates Zhukovsky ...

Utair to start international flights from Ufa
Russia’s Utair Aviation plans to launch its first international flight, a 2X-weekly Ufa-Vienna Boeing 737-500 service, from June 3.
Ufa International Airport is one of the Utair’s regional hubs. Up to one-third of the passengers are carried from the airport by Utair flights, the airport said. The airline connects the city with Moscow, Anapa, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Surgut, Tyumen and Khanty-Mansiysk.

Vietjet launching Ho Chi Minh to Bali flights in May
Vietnam LCC Vietjet Air has announced it will launch 5X weekly flights from Ho Chi Minh to Indonesia’s Bali-Ngurah Rai from May 29.
This will be Vietnam’s first connection between the two cities, and Vietjet’s first Indonesia destination. The airline will operate the Airbus A321, seating 229, on the route.

A4E criticizes low EU ATC performance targets
Airlines for Europe (A4E) has rebuked the European Union (EU) for extending the maximum threshold for Europe's air navigation service providers (ANSP) from 0.5 minutes to 0.9 minutes per flight, the weakest performance targets ever.
With the new targets in place for the next two years, a minimum of 9.9 million minutes of delays per year will be acceptable versus 5.5 million minutes.

United plans seasonal Cape Town flight
United Airlines is seeking authority to begin seasonal service to Cape Town, South Africa, from its Newark hub in December.
The Star Alliance carrier would offer thrice-weekly service with a 252-seat Boeing 787-9 through the end of March 2020, it says today. The route needs US Department of Transportation approval.

JetBlue to link New York and Guayaquil with A321neo
JetBlue Airways will launch nonstop service from New York John F Kennedy to Guayaquil with the Airbus A321neo, the first of which it is taking delivery in May.
The route is the first made possible by the A321neo's increased range and fuel efficiency, says the New York-based carrier.

Lufthansa seeks museum place for vintage Ju 52
Lufthansa Group is discussing options for placing its vintage Junkers Ju 52 on display in a museum.
The company transferred the 83-year old aircraft earlier this month from Munich to Hamburg, where it is being stored in a hangar.

Garuda's LCC Citilink set to gain Malaysian affiliate
Two Malaysian companies have agreed to explore establishing a budget airline that would use the brand name of Garuda Indonesia's low-cost arm Citilink.
Radio frequency identification company SMTrack will acquire a 60% stake in Citilink's Malaysian general sales agent, Dexma Express, for MYR2.8 million ($680,600).

CDB Aviation moves to take back A330s from Jet Airways
CDB Aviation has filed applications to deregister two Airbus A330-300s operated by Jet Airways, while Castlelake and Orix Aviation have also filed similar motions to take back Boeing 737-800s.
Records from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) show that the A330s bear MSNs 1370 and 1361 and are usually stationed in Mumbai. They are powered by General Electric CF6 engines.

Dubai prepares to temporarily close one runway
Dubai International Airport (DXB) will close its southern runway this week for maintenance work, but the airport and Emirates Airline say they are well prepared for the 45-day closure.
Work on the runway, one of two at DXB, will begin April 14 and is scheduled to run through May 30.

New shopping experience awaits passengers at Hamburg Airport
Heinemann Duty Free has opened three new sales spaces with new concepts at Hamburg Airport.
Several shops in the Pier and Airport Plaza have been remodelled since the start of the year, providing visitors with a new shopping experience at its home base airport.
According to Heinemann, the new outlets boast a modern design, fresh product range and a host of new brands.

Heathrow records 29th consecutive month of traffic growth
Despite all the Brexit doom and gloom, London Heathrow’s passenger numbers continue to rise, climbing by 0.5% in March to 6.5 million passengers.
The upturn in passengers marks the 29th consecutive month of growth for the airport and means that 17.9 million travellers (+1.4%) passed through its facilities in the first three months of 2019.

Greece eyes F-35s as F-16 replacement
Greece is considering the potential acquisition of up to 30 Lockheed Martin F-35s to replace the oldest F-16C/Ds operated by the air force.
"Beyond the upgrade of the F-16 fighter jets, we are in the process of selecting a new plane for Greece, so we can gradually move to the new generation of aircraft," said Greek defence minister Evangelos Apostolakis on 5 April.
