Aviation Quote

Against this pale, duck-egg blue and greyish mauve were silhouetted a number of small black shapes: all of them bombers, and all of them moving the same way. One hundred and thirty-four miles ahead, and directly in their path, stretched a crimson-red glow; cologne was on fire. Already, only twenty-three minutes after the attack had started, Cologne was ablaze from end to end, and the main force of the attack was still to come.

- Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, VC, DSO

I pored over a lot of maps and airport lists to figure it out. Some were obvious. Most were not. I've flown through Hong Kong a few times now. There's a lot more airport there now, but . . . close enough. The Aleutians look fairly distinctive thanks to the climate and architecture. Haneda had to be one of a couple of Japanese airports. Couldn't immediately recall which, but the list of airports on islands that size is not long. (And I'd already eliminated the non-Japanese one.) Hiroshima looks distinctly Japanese, so it wasn't hard to scan coastal cities and find it. (I really should have recognized that coastline anyway.) And I had a hunch the then unidentified Nagasaki was also in Japan. Kadena looked Japanese to me too, actually, but I missed it on my Google Earth scan. Was looking for JSDF bases. I'd scanned Naha on the Japanese coastal airports quest but I wasn't looking at the landlocked airports at the time. (How do you get a landlocked airport on Okinawa?!) An image search saved me, which feels like cheating, but they so rarely work. Midland looked like oil country, so I went down a list of airports in Texas and bam. (Was completely prepared to go through commercial service airports in the more or less the entire southwest.) And Monterrey nearly skunked me. I think I literally did end up scanning maps of the great plains and when that didn't work more or less every US commercial service airport and then Canada in desperation. Whoops! I really should have given up, but it was the last one and I was determined.

Mostly I enjoy maps and scavenger hunts. (And I use an occasional image search. Though . . . that does not always save you.)

(Also, while I've tried this before, this is the first time I've posted on this particular sort of quiz as it's the first time I've found all of them. Still working on the new list.)
