American’s fleet renewal slows substantially this year
Following a massive injection of new aircraft in the four years following its December 2013 emergence from Chapter 11 and merger with US Airways, American Airlines is slowing the pace of its fleet renewal and dialing back spending on aircraft. In 2018, it will take delivery of just 22 mainline aircraft, allowing it to reduce capital expenditures on new aircraft to $1.8 billion in 2018 from $4.1 billion in 2017.

CFM reports record orders in 2017; targets 2018 delivery catch-up
With almost 14,300 LEAP engines on order and CFM56s continuing to be produced in larger numbers than forecast, CFM International said it aims to close a 4-5-week gap between planned and actual engine deliveries to Airbus and Boeing by the end of 2018. The General Electric-Safran joint venture produced more than 1,900 engines in 2017, beating the previous record of 1,770 set in 2016, but has fought to keep deliveries of LEAP-1A/1Bs on schedule as production ramps up to support increasing A320neo and 737 MAX assembly rates. Of the 1,900 total CFM engines produced in 2017 1,441 were CFM56s and 459 were LEAP-1A/1Bs.

Southeast Asia's legacy carriers struggle
The majority of Southeast Asia's legacy carriers had a lacklustre 2017 as fierce competition and aggressive capacity expansion put pressure on yields, and 2018 looks likely to be equally challenging should fuel price continue climbing. And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen

I knew two passengers on that flight. I got a message about a month after the incident from one of them. An Army Lt. Colonel. He was one of the seriously wounded sitting over the wing, starboard side. He sent me a picture from a hospital. He'd his scalp just about ripped clean off. He survived and finished his career.

I'm no commercial pilot, but I think I'd went on the BNA if I'd been flying that thing.
