Embraer teams with Uber to explore development of flying cars
Embraer will team with Uber Elevate to explore the development of small vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (VTOLs), the Brazilian manufacturer said. Announced as a preliminary partnership between San Francisco-based multi-platform transportation company Uber and Embraer’s Business Innovation Center, the project will develop the Uber Elevate Network, described as an “ecosystem that will allow the potential development and deployment of small electric [VTOLS] for short urban commutes.”

Zodiac CEO’s future in doubt after $13 million 1H loss
French aircraft equipment manufacturer Zodiac Aerospace—which is being acquired by Safran—has posted a €12 million ($13.1 million) interim operating loss, triggering CEO Olivier Zarrouati to offer his position. “Olivier Zarrouati has placed his mandate as CEO at the disposal of the board of directors. Even if the recent results were disappointing, the board of directors recognized his outstanding achievement over his 10-year tenure. The total shareholders’ return is just below 300%, which is the second-best performance of the global sector,” Zodiac Aerospace chairman Didier Domange said.

Aeroflot 777 hits turbulence, injuring more than 20 passengers
An Aeroflot Boeing 777, en route from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Bangkok, encountered turbulence 40 minutes before landing at Bangkok International Airport May 1, injuring more than 20 out of 313 passengers.

Aeromexico posts $13.8 million net loss in 1Q
Grupo Aeromexico reported a MXP258 million ($13.8 million) net loss in the 2017 first quarter, reversed from a MXP161 million net profit in the year-ago quarter. The company said the 1Q financial results reflected the negative impact of a 64.4% increase in fuel prices year-over-year (YOY), combined with a 12.5% depreciation of the Mexican peso against the US dollar.

Alliance Air to lease 10 ATRs from DAE
UAE-based lessor Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) signed long-term lease agreements May 1 for 10 ATR 72-600 regional turboprops with Air India regional subsidiary Alliance Air. The aircraft are scheduled to deliver throughout 2017 and will be used to grow Alliance Air’s network.

China Southern deal a one-off for American Airlines
American Airlines' investment in China Southern is likely a one-time deal and does not signal a move toward expanding stakes in foreign airlines for American. The investment should not affect American's relationship with Cathay Pacific or Japan Airlines.

Finnair halves 1Q loss to $8.7 million
Finnair has reported an €8 million ($8.7 million) first-quarter net loss, narrowed 46.9% from a €15.1 million loss in the year-ago period. “Revenue grew in particular due to solid demand for Asian and domestic flights. The passenger load factor rose and ancillary revenue per passenger [up 9.4% at €12.99] also continued to increase. Our comparable operating result improved €6 million from the previous year. Hence, our result has now been on an upward trend for 10 consecutive quarters,” CEO Pekka Vauramo said.

Hawaiian Airlines introduces new brand and livery
Hawaiian Airlines unveiled an updated brand identity and the freshly painted livery of a Boeing 717, the first of its fleet of more than 50 aircraft that will feature the new design. Hawaiian’s president and CEO Mark Dunkerley said the new livery “acknowledges our place as Hawaii’s airline and underscores the commitment our employees make every day to provide our guests with a gracious and genuine island welcome.”

Hawaiian Airlines to offer year-round L.A.-Kaua'i connection
Hawaiian Airlines has announced year-round service connecting Kaua'i and Los Angeles beginning May 26. "For the past four years, our summer schedule has been well-received by West Coast travelers seeking convenient service to our Neighbor Islands," said Hawaiian Airlines' Peter Ingram.

JetBlue reviews use, plans for Embraer 190
JetBlue Airways is citing the Embraer 190 aircraft as a key contributing factor to its margin growth in Boston and is weighing plans for the aircraft, which has a higher unit cost than larger passenger jets such as the Airbus A320. JetBlue operates more Embraer 190s than any other carrier.

West Atlantic eyes opportunities outside Europe
Sweden-based cargo airline West Atlantic is to seek new business outside its traditional Western European area of operations, as it reported an increased net loss of SEK81.8 million ($9.3 million) for 2016, compared to a loss of SEK49.6 million in 2015. The result came on revenues of SEK1.32 billion, slightly down from SEK1.4 billion for the previous year. The number of cargo flights operated dipped from 26,790 to 23,200.

WestJet receives IATA NDC certification
Calgary-based low-cost carrier (LCC) WestJet said it has become the first Canadian airline to receive IATA New Distribution Capability (NDC) level 2 certification, confirming the LCC’s ability to send and receive NDC messages. NDC is an IATA-led initiative to enhance the capability of communications between airlines and travel agents.

WestJet names CEO for new ULCC
Calgary-based low-cost carrier WestJet has appointed Bob Cummings as EVP of its yet-to-be-named ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC), which will launch late in 2017 or early 2018 with an initial fleet of 10 “high-density” Boeing 737-800s.

About 55 families with children with autism on Saturday got a chance to be part of a full airport experience at South Carolina's Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, including checking in, going through security, boarding a plane and picking up their luggage at baggage claim.
