The two airlines operating Bombardier CSeries are performing precautionary borescope inspections of the aircraft's Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turobfans – checks that follow reports of issues with related PW1100G engines, Bombardier confirms.

EASA issues fire safety warning on personal electronics in cargo hold
In a bulletin that seems to directly question the wisdom of the new US and UK bans on large electronic devices in carry-on luggage, Europe’s aviation safety authority today warns that such devices are “dangerous goods” in the cargo hold. The European Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) April 5 bulletin does not mention directly new US and UK security rules introduced in March, banning passengers from carrying onboard electronic items larger than smartphones because of fears they may contain explosives. But the EASA directive is clearly meant to raise awareness of what it sees as a heightened fire risk the rules bring to airliners.

Airbus creates cabin upgrades subsidiary
Airbus has created Airbus Interiors Services (AIS) to perform commercial aircraft cabin upgrade work, as a revamp of its former Airbus Corporate Jet Center (ACJC) business. Toulouse-based AIS, which is part of Services by Airbus, will support airlines with Airbus cabin upgrades under the parent manufacturer’s design organization approval (DOA).

24-hour strike forces Alitalia to cancel 394 flights
Italian national carrier Alitalia was forced to cancel 394 flights—including 12 intercontinental flights—between late evening April 4 and early morning April 6 because of a 24-hour strike action called by trade unions, the SkyTeam member reported on its website.

American Airlines grows by 30% in Asia ahead of China Southern deal
In recent years American Airlines has grown by 30% in Asia, an expansion capped by the airline's plan to buy a 3% stake in China Southern Airlines. Anticipated agreements between China Southern and American will provide American's customers access to 70 Chinese destinations.

American Airlines adds capacity on Cincinnati-Dallas route
American Airlines' increased seating capacity for direct flights to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport will add 52 more seats per day in Cincinnati, giving customers the choice of first class seats, increased legroom options and enhanced Wi-Fi on select aircraft.

Cargolux 747-8F reaches 1 million hours on GEnx engine
Luxembourg-based freight carrier Cargolux said it has become the first operator to fly 1 million hours with GE Aviation’s GEnx engine, which powers its Boeing 747-8F aircraft. Cargolux, which was the GEnx engine launch customer, said it has experienced no inflight shutdowns since the engines went into service five-and-a-half years ago.

Go-around would have avoided A330 hard landing: ATSB
The captain of a Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330-300 aircraft should have initiated a go-around to avoid the hard landing it made at Melbourne Tullamarine airport on 15 March 2015. The final report on the incident by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau found that the A330, registered 9M-MTA, experienced a downward acceleration of 2.6g at touchdown, requiring the landing gear to be changed before it returned to service.

United to shrink Guam hub from November
United Airlines will shrink its Guam hub from November 2017, as it shifts Boeing 737s back to the US mainland. The redeployment of three 737s to the mainland from Micronesia will allow the Chicago-based Star Alliance carrier to increase aircraft utilisation, says Howard Attarian, senior vice-president of flight operations at United, in a letter to pilots on 4 April.

United Airlines flew 500 disabled military veterans and their coaches to the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Aspen, Colo. United has sponsored the event for two decades.

London Stansted wins planning permission for new Arrivals building
London Stansted today proved that it isn't the capital's forgotten gateway by revealing that it has received planning permission for a new £130 million arrivals building. The airport, which has had to watch London's Gatwick, London City, Luton and Heathrow unveil or launch ambitious development projects over the last few years, insists that its upgrade will enhance the passenger experience and provide capacity for growth over the next decade.

Amsterdam Schiphol's new Temporary Departure Hall opens for business
Schiphol Group president and CEO, Jos Nijhuis, and Sharon Dijksma, Holland's outgoing State Secretary with the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, today officially opened a Temporary Departure Hall at Amsterdam Schiphol. The hall – which will be used by around two million passengers each year – is Schiphol’s response to the major growth in the number of passengers travelling to Schengen destinations.

Juno and Jupiter helicopters arrive at RAF Shawbury
The first three of the UK's new training helicopters for its armed forces have arrived at their new RAF Shawbury home. A pair of Airbus Helicopters H135 Juno HT1s and a single H145 Jupiter HT1 were flown to the Midlands site on 3 April, following modification work at the manufacturer's UK facility at Oxford airport.

Marine One to hit first flight this summer
Sikorsky is set to complete first flight this summer of the VH-92, the Marine One configuration of its commercial, heavy-lift S-92 helicopter. Two developmental model aircraft, EDM 1 and 2, are making their way into the VH-92 configuration today at Sikorsky’s facility in Stratford, Connecticut, says US Marine Corps Col Robert Pridgen, presidential helicopter programme manager for Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR).
