Brazil opens WTO case against Bombardier financial aid
One day after Bombardier received a $282 million cash injection from the Canadian government, Brazilian trade officials, with the support of Embraer, formally requested consultations with their Canadian counterparts in the World Trade Organization over alleged subsidies supporting the CSeries aircraft program. The formal request for consultations comes nearly two months after Brazil announced it would challenge what it considers $4 billion in illegal subsidies provided by the Canadian government to Bombardier’s flagship CSeries airliner.

Ottawa pledges C$372.5 million more to Bombardier
Correction: Bombardier in late 2016 refinanced loans, and no longer has loan maturities in 2018. Canada's federal government will provide Bombardier C$372.5 million ($282 million) over four years to help fund development of Bombardier's Global 7000 business jet and CSeries airliner, the government announces.

United Aircraft broke even last year: chief
Russia’s United Aircraft broke even last year despite heavy investment in a number of civil and military programmes, including the Irkut MC-21. The company says there was a “substantial burden” arising from programs including the Ilyushin Il-76 modernisation and continued development of the Sukhoi Superjet 100.

Air Canada to connect Toronto, Jacksonville, Fla.
The Jacksonville Aviation Authority announced Monday that beginning June 14 Air Canada will offer daily non-stop flights to Toronto. This is an expansion of their current weekend-only service, which started May 2016. The flights, offered once a day, provide customers with connections to European and other Canadian cities.

Air Canada's "Apres in the Air" private jet was created to honor Canada's 150th birthday. The private jet package can accommodate 58 passengers and includes stays at multiple Fairmont Hotels & Resorts properties.

Alaska Airlines' "Wine Flies Free" program offers complimentary shipping of one case of wine for its passengers traveling between San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Seattle. The program will launch this spring.

Etihad CEO: 2016 a ‘year of sustained growth in a tough environment’
In 2016, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways saw a year “of sustained growth in a very tough business environment,” Etihad Aviation Group (EAG) president and CEO James Hogan said in a Feb. 8 statement. Financial details were not released; the airline usually releases its full-year financial report in April. Hogan indicated the airline’s prime accomplishment of the year was the official launch of the Etihad Aviation Group in May 2016. EAG includes Etihad’s airline equity partner network (airberlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Alitalia, Jet Airways, Virgin Australia and Etihad Regional), Etihad’s engineering division, Etihad’s airport services division and Hala Abu Dhabi, Etihad’s tourism management division.

Korean Air, Thai Airways name new leaders
Korean Air has named Walter Cho as president and COO. Cho was formerly the head of the corporate strategy & planning, cargo business and passenger business divisions. He was EVP and COO before assuming his position as president and COO. According to the Seoul-based carrier, Cho has “vast experience in the industry and successfully managed the airline’s aircraft acquisition and modernization program and has worked with international aviation companies to define Korean Air’s fleet, one of the industry’s youngest.”

Hawaiian Airlines reaches agreement in principle with pilots union
Hawaiian Airlines and the pilots union have come to an agreement in principle, setting the stage for a new labor contract. The new deal reportedly includes substantial pay increases for pilots and a ratification bonus.

Norwegian of ‘huge’ economic interest to USA: White House
Norwegian’s plans to expand with its Irish subsidiary Norwegian Air International got a boost from the White House today, with press secretary Sean Spicer saying the US has a “huge economic interest” in the airline's growth. “There is a deal in which [Norwegian’s] having 50% of the crews and the pilots are American based, they’re flying Boeing planes – there’s a huge economic interest that America has in that deal right now,” he says during a press briefing today.

Pakistani Airliner Diverted Because Of Disruptive Passenger
A Pakistani airliner landed at London’s Stansted Airport on Tuesday after it was diverted from Heathrow and escorted in by RAF fighter jets. The Pakistan International Airlines aircraft, on a scheduled service from Lahore to London, was diverted to Stansted because of a disruptive passenger, Essex police said.

Singapore Airlines Q3 Net Profit Drops
Singapore Airlines reported a third quarter net profit of SGD$177.2 million (USD$124.9 million), down from SGD$274.9 million in the previous year period. Operating profit came in at SGD$292.9 million, a 1.7 percent increase on the previous year, partly due to a strong performance by its SIA Cargo unit and lower fuel costs.

Spirit Airlines Profit Drops On Higher Costs
Spirit Airlines reported its fourth quarter and full year results showing a fall in net income for both periods. For the fourth quarter to end December 2016, Spirit reported a 34.8 percent drop in net profit to USD$48.5 million over the same period in 2015.

Westjet’s Full Year Profit Falls 20 Percent
Canada's WestJet Airlines reported fourth quarter and full-year results showing a net profit fall of almost 20 percent for the year. For the fourth quarter, profit fell 13 percent to CAD$55.2 million (USD$41.9 million) on revenue up 6.2 percent at CAD$1.02 billion. Operating expenses for the quarter were CAD$932.5 million, up 10.2 percent on the previous year period.

Baltimore airport served record 25.1 million passengers in 2016
Maryland's Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport served a record 25.1 million passengers in 2016, including more than 1.2 million international passengers. "New airlines and service to new domestic and international destinations have led to steady growth and new records," said airport CEO Ricky Smith.

Leonardo returns to T-X competition alone
Leonardo has decided to compete for the US Air Force’s $16 billion T-X trainer contract despite the withdrawal last month of Raytheon as the company’s US partner and prime contractor. The decision by the Italian manufacturer creates and at least three-way competition for the contract to replace the Northrop T-38C with 350 new aircraft and training systems, with Boeing/Saab offering a clean-sheet design and Lockheed Martin/Korea Aerospace Industries proposing a slightly modified T-50A.

USAF to test Israeli runway monitoring system
The US Air Force is evaluating technology developed by Israeli company Xsight Systems to rapidly detect damage to runways at air bases outside the USA. American sources tell FlightGlobal that the aim of the evaluation is to find technology that will enable personnel at USAF bases to obtain information quickly about the nature and extent of damage caused to runways by terrorist attacks or during war, to enable rapid repairs.

Elbit wins Mi-17 upgrade deal in Asia-Pacific
Elbit Systems' efforts to secure more business in the helicopter upgrade market has led to a roughly $110 million contract to modernize and maintain the Mil Mi-17 transports operated by an undisclosed country in the Asia-Pacific region. "The project will be performed over a five-year period," the company says, adding that it covers "dozens" of aircraft.
