Boeing sees demand for 248,000 new pilots in Asia-Pacific
Boeing forecasts that more than 500,000 new pilots and technicians will be needed in Asia-Pacific over the next 20 years. The airframer anticipates demand to be driven by the large number of aircraft deliveries for the region. It foresees carriers in Asia-Pacific requiring 248,000 fresh commercial pilots through to 2035, up from its projection of 226,000 last year. It will also need 268,000 new technicians over the next two decades.

Aeroflot Group to carry 43.5 million passengers in 2016
Russia’s Aeroflot Group will carry 43.5 million passengers in 2016, up 10.4% year-over-year (YOY), Aeroflot Airline CEO Vitaly Savelyev at the group’s community board meeting. According to a group statement, its low-cost subsidiary Pobeda Airlines has strengthened its position this year. The Moscow Vnukovo-based airline is projected to carry 4.2 million passengers in 2016, up 35.5% YOY.

Air Canada to launch additional service in 2017 from Vancouver
Air Canada ended the year flying high at its Vancouver industry Christmas party with new routes nailed down in 2016, more routes announced for 2017 and a stellar third-quarter financial report and expansion plans that would see substantial growth in 2017 and into 2020. A spokesperson for Vancouver International Airport confirmed that Air Canada dominates Canada’s westerly gateway as the airport is recording unprecedented numbers of passengers in 2016.

Dubai-based Emirates expects to roll out a new premium-economy product within the next year to 18 months. In September, Emirates Airline president Tim Clark said he was evaluating premium economy and ancillaries as a way to address declining yields.

Hawaiian Airlines opts for Inmarsat platform for A321neo flight deck
Hawaiian Airlines (HAL) has selected Inmarsat’s next generation IP-based SwiftBroadband-Safety (SB-S) platform for installation on its new Airbus A321neo fleet. Inmarsat’s SB-S service will deliver secure broadband connectivity via the Cobham AVIATOR 350D system to the flight deck for all voice and data applications on HAL’s new single aisle aircraft being line fit by Airbus.

Jazz to maintain CommutAir's Dash 8s
Jazz Aviation has won a contract to provide heavy maintenance and overhaul of Bombardier Dash 8 turboprops operated by United Express regional carrier CommutAir, Jazz announces. Jazz, a division of Halifax-based Chorus Aviation, will provide the MRO services under its Jazz Technical Services division at a facility on the grounds of Halifax Stanfield International Airport, Jazz says.

Bolivia has detained the chief executive of the LaMia airline whose plane crashed last week in Columbia killing 71 people. CEO Gustavo Vargas and two others were detained in Santa Cruz for questioning over the crash.

PIA confirms PK661 crash location and aircraft occupancy
Pakistan International Airlines has detailed the occupancy of the ATR 42 turboprop that crashed today while operating flight PK661 from Chitral to Islamabad. There were 47 people on board, says the airline. These comprised 42 passengers and five crew members.

Southwest posts 7.2% increase in Nov. traffic
Southwest Airlines reported a 7.2% jump in traffic as measured in revenue passenger miles for November. The carrier also posted increases in load factor for the month.

Virgin Australia 737 veers off runway in Darwin
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has launched an investigation into how a Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 veered off the runway during landing at Darwin International airport on 6 December. The aircraft, registered VH-VUI (MSN 34441) was operating a flight from Melbourne when it encountered gusty wind conditions while landing on runway 29. It subsequently veered off the runway.

UPS adds flights at Calif. airport for peak delivery season
In preparation for its peak holiday package delivery season, UPS is adding flight operations between San Bernadino International Airport in California and its main hub in Louisville, Ky. "This is our busiest time of year, and with the huge spike in holiday shipments, we need additional capacity to deliver for our customers," said Tom Cuce, president of the South California District for UPS.

First phase of terminal renovation finished at Ariz. airport
Arizona's Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport has completed the first phase of its $590 million renovation of Terminal 3.. The updated terminal features 31 new ticket counters, a consolidated security checkpoint and a new Museum Gallery featuring the history and culture of Arizona.

Berlin Brandenburg airport ‘on track’; no opening date set
Berlin Brandenburg International Airport (BER) has announced it has completed 80% of the milestones in planning and construction of the airport terminal; however, the much-delayed airport project has yet to commit to an opening date. Construction work on the new airport began in 2006. BER was originally scheduled to open in October 2011, but that was delayed to May 2012 and then to 2017 following major construction problems and technical issues, especially concerning fire protection installations.

Trump plans to renegotiate new Air Force One pricing
US President-elect Donald Trump says he will lead pricing negotiations with Boeing on a program to replace two 747-200-derived VC-25As serving as executive transports also known as Air Force One. “That’s what I’m here for,” Trump said during an interview with NBC on 7 December. “I’m going to negotiate prices. Planes are too expensive and we’re going to get the prices down. And if we don’t get the rpices down we’re not going to order them. We’re going to stay with what we have.”
