Aeroflot Group posts 9-month net profit of $693.5 million
Russia’s Aeroflot Group has reported a net profit of RUB43.8 billion ($693.5 million) for the first nine months of 2016 to Sept. 30, up significantly from RUB1.8 billion in the year-ago period. Revenue grew 23.2% year-over-year (YOY) to RUB 381.3 billion for the period. The results are published according to International Financial reporting Standards (IFRS).

American Airlines Reduces Number of Flights to Cuba
The travel industry is growing increasingly worried about Cuba. America’s newest travel destination will receive 500 U.S.-Havana flights by the end of 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Bloomberg reports that American Airlines Group Inc. (AAL) has already cut back on its plans to fly to Cuba. Link

Korean Air expands US presence, strengthens Delta partnership
Korean Air is aggressively expanding on the US west coast and strengthening its relationship with SkyTeam partner Delta Air Lines “to ensure the airline’s continued leadership in 2017 and beyond,” the Seoul-based carrier said in a statement. Korean Air said it is increasing flights from Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and creating a “massive network between the US and Asia through a blossoming partnership with Delta Air Lines.”

Fuel emergency reported by Bolivian Avro RJ85 before fatal crash
The flight crew of the Bolivian British Aerospace Avro RJ85 that crashed in Colombia had declared a fuel emergency while waiting to land at Medellin airport in Rionegro, according to an air traffic control recording. Operated by charter carrier LAMIA Bolivia, the aircraft was awaiting clearance for final approach to the airport, which had been temporarily closed due to an unscheduled arrival of a VivaColombia flight.

Lucky Air plans to launch LCC in Chengdu
Hainan Airlines’ low-cost subsidiary Lucky Air plans to launch a low-cost carrier (LCC) in the Sichuan Province capital of Chengdu in an effort to explore the market potential of Southwest China. According to a statement released by Hainan Airlines through the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the new venture will be named Shen Niao Airlines and is expected to have a registered capital of CNY3 billion ($435 million).

Lufthansa makes pilots new mediation offer
Lufthansa has made pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit a pay rise offer in an effort to end extensive industrial action that has gripped the carrier over the last week. The airline says that it sent the union yesterday a proposal of raising wages 2.4% this year and 2% in 2017 – plus a one-off payment – which is “not linked to any other terms or conditions”.

Malaysia Airlines sees 'steady progress' in Q3 performance
Malaysia Airlines says in a quarterly update that it showed “steady progress” in the three months ended 30 September, and is "on target to deliver ahead of budget”. The airline did not provide any financial figures, but says that cost control continues to be its "central focus".

United to review $12.5 bln Airbus jet order
United Continental Holdings Inc said it was reviewing whether to alter an order of about $12.5 billion at list prices for Airbus Group SE's largest twin-engine jets, the A350-1000s, for smaller long-haul models. Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that United, the No. 3 U.S. airline, may swap some orders of the Airbus A350-1000s for other wide-body jets such as the A350-900, which can fly longer routes, or the smaller A330.

Wizz Air concludes financing deals for 10 Airbus family aircraft
Central and Eastern European low-cost carrier (LCC) Wizz Air has concluded a sale and lease back deal with Bank of Communications and Financial Leasing (BoComm) for eight Airbus A320 family aircraft, and has finalized a previously announced operating lease deal with Singapore lessor BOC Aviation for two more of the type. The BoComm deal covers two A320-200s and six A321-200s with a nine-year lease term. The aircraft will be delivered between September 2017 and June 2018 and represent a list price value of $885.4 million.

United Airlines' new Polaris lounge opens at ORD
After months of build-up, United Airlines' new Polaris international business class product finally is happening. The Chicago-based airline today unveiled at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport the first of what eventually will be nine new Polaris lounges worldwide.

History made at Charlotte Douglas with Havana flight takeoff
For 63 passengers and crew members aboard American Airlines' Flight 801 Wednesday morning, their trip through Charlotte Douglas International Airport was anything but ordinary. Flight 801 marked inaugural commercial flight service between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Havana's José Martí International Airport. To honor the occasion, American Airlines' staff at CLT organized a special early-morning event that included passing out chocolate cigars and fedoras to passengers, presenting an authentic Cuban-cuisine spread and sending the plane off with a water-cannon salute.

O'Hare, airlines weather one-day strike by airport workers
Picket signs and protesting airport workers were very much in evidence Tuesday at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. They were the very visible components of a strike orchestrated by the Service Employees International union in an effort to secure higher wages for groups of airport workers ranging from janitors to baggage handlers, airplane cabin cleaners and wheelchair attendants.

Israel approves purchase of 17 more F-35s
The Israeli cabinet on 27 November approved the purchase of 17 more Lockheed Martin F-35Is, bringing the total number for the Israeli air force (IAF) to 50. The additional acquisition was made possible following the signing of a new US military assistance agreement with Israel, and the cabinet approval followed a briefing of the IAF command which concluded that two operational squadrons were required, totalling 50 aircraft.

Japan receives first F-35
Japan has received its first Lockheed Martin F-35A, marking the first delivery of a Joint Strike Fighter acquired via the foreign military sale (FMS) route. The aircraft was officially rolled out in September and was handed over to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force on 28 November. Japan will use it for training at Luke AFB in Arizona.

Congress punts extra F-35s, Super Hornets in defense bill
US lawmakers couldn’t squeeze additional Lockheed F-35s and Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornets into their annual defense policy bill and instead reverted to the numbers stated in the Obama administration's original budget request. After ironing out differences in their separate legislation, House and Senate lawmakers came to a consensus this week on a defence policy bill that could come up for a vote by the end of this week.
