ATR: China will need 300 new turboprops by 2035
ATR anticipates the Chinese market will need 300 turboprops over the next 20 years,the European turboprop manufacturer said Nov. 2. The Franco-Italian company said at the Farnborough Airshow in July that it anticipated major growth in China’s regional airline route network.

Pratt & Whitney Wins USD$800 Mln Contracts From China
Pratt & Whitney has received orders worth almost USD$800 million to supply engines to two Chinese carriers. Air China ordered engines for 18 Airbus A320ceo aircraft, and Shenzhen Airlines for 13 A320ceos.

Spirit Aero Reports Third Quarter Profit
Spirit AeroSystems reported an 11 percent rise in third quarter operating income to USD$214.4 million. The Wichita-based aerostructure manufacturer’s net income fell 54 percent to USD$145.1 million, however, after the previous year quarter benefited from a USD$135.9 million income tax provision.

US airlines expect 27.3 million passengers worldwide over Thanksgiving
Some 27.3 million passengers are expected to fly worldwide on US airlines from Friday, Nov. 18, through Tuesday, Nov. 29, up 2.5% over last year's Thanksgiving crush. "Travelers should rest assured that while more people will be flying, there will be more than an adequate number of seats available," said John Heimlich, chief economist for Airlines for America. Airlines are accommodating the growing demand for travel by adding 74,000 more seats each day.

IAE V2500 engine to power Air China, Shenzhen Airlines, BoComm A320s
Air China, Shenzhen Airlines and Shanghai-based Bank of Communications Financial Leasing Co. (BoComm) have selected IAE International Aero Engines’ V2500 engine to power 41 firm ordered Airbus A320 family aircraft. The engine selection was announced at the Zhuhai Airshow Nov. 2.

Air Canada CEO: Strategy for international growth a success
Air Canada's strategy of expanding international flights is succeeding, according to CEO Calin Rovinescu. The carrier estimates 62% of revenue will come from international routes by 2018, compared to 54% in 2011.

Air France names new CEO
Air France-KLM has appointed Franck Terner, who is currently Air France-KLM EVP engineering and maintenance, as the next CEO of Air France. In a statement dated Nov. 3, but released to the group’s website on Nov. 2, the Franco-Dutch airline group confirmed the anticipated leadership change.

Hawaiian is "very strategic" with social media, exec says
Hawaiian Airlines manages its social media accounts with a staff of two people by "being very strategic in the content that we produce on the outbound side," said Asiana Ponciano, social media marketing specialist for the carrier. "Our philosophy for social media marketing is to entice new visitors, and keep those who have experienced our service loyal to us by serving up to them authentic content coming from a page that is local," Ponciano said. "So connecting to those who identify us a hometown carrier, but also to those around the world who have a special connection to Hawaii." Hawaiian offers content on three channels on Facebook and four channels on Twitter, among other accounts.

IAG To Add Wi-Fi To Short-Haul Fleet
IAG, the parent company of British Airways and Iberia, will introduce inflight Wi-Fi across its short-haul fleet from next year. The agreement with international satellite telecoms company Inmarsat will give passengers access to broadband internet on mobile devices.

JetBlue Airways launched daily service between Boston Logan International Airport and LaGuardia Airport on Monday. JetBlue also partnered with Lyft to offer passengers the ride-sharing service through the JetBlue app.

Lufthansa Group posts strong 3Q despite pricing pressures
The Lufthansa Group has reported a third-quarter net profit of €1.42 billion ($1.6 billion) up 79% from a net income of €794 million in 3Q 2015, as the Group stabilizes in a difficult market environment. Third-quarter revenue decreased 1.2% to €8.8 billion year-over-year (YOY), resulting in an adjusted EBIT of €1.1 billion for the quarter, down 6.3% YOY.

Lufthansa wants same Frankfurt fee terms as Ryanair
Irish low-cost carrier (LCC) Ryanair’s announcement that it plans to start operations from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) next year drew a swift response from Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr, who called for equal treatment on airport fees. “Lufthansa and Ryanair are the biggest operators on short-haul routes within Europe. For us, it was no surprise the carrier is coming to Frankfurt. However, we at Lufthansa want to have the same conditions that [Ryanair CEO] Michael [O’Leary] has,” Spohr told reporters and analysts during Lufthansa’s third-quarter conference call.

Ryanair to open Frankfurt base
Ryanair has confirmed it is to open a new base at Frankfurt Main airport and will start four routes to leisure destinations from the German airport next summer. The announcement further underlines the Irish carrier's move into more primary airports over recent years and Frankfurt Main - Europe's fourth biggest airport by passenger number in 2015 - will be the largest airport Ryanair serves.

United Airlines has increased its frequency between Auckland and San Francisco to daily and the All Blacks test in Chicago has already proved a winner for the airline. Virgin Australia hurt by weaker revenue in 1Q
Virgin Australia reported a net loss of A$34.6 million ($26.4 million) for the three months through Sept. 30, reversed from a net profit of A$1.7 million for the same period last year. The carrier cited “subdued industry trading conditions during its fiscal first quarter, particularly [in] the domestic market.” Virgin indicated it is curbing growth plans because of softening domestic revenue. “Capacity is being actively managed in response to the trading environment,” the airline said.

Xiamen Airlines selects GEnx-1B engines to power Boeing 787-9s
China Southern subsidiary Xiamen Airlines has selected GE Aviation GEnx-1B engines to power its additional six Boeing 787-9s from a July 2016 order. The engine agreement was signed at the Airshow China 2016 in Zhuhai. Xiamen Airlines also expanded a TrueChoice Material agreement for the new GEnx-1B fleet for the new and used material and advance repairs needed for engine MRO services. The engine order and TrueChoice Material agreement are valued at more than $630 million at list prices.

Texas airport to spend $3.5 million to update screening checkpoints
Texas' Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport will spend $3.5 million to equip passenger security checkpoints with 10 new automated screening machines. The first two should be in operation before spring break 2017. American Airlines previously announced it has invested $5 million to implement new screening technologies at Chicago O'Hare, DFW, Los Angeles and Miami airports.

Israeli firefighting squadron to change command
Six years after a firefighting air squadron was established within the Israeli air force, responsibility for the division is to be handed over to the police force’s aerial unit. The squadron has carried out some 12,000 firefighting sorties since a lethal forest fire in northern Israel was the catalyst for its establishment.
