Grupo Aeromexico 2Q net income down 73%
Grupo Aeromexico reported MXP28 million ($1.5 million) in net income for the 2016 second quarter, down 72.5% from its MXP102 million net profit in the year-ago period. The Mexico flag carrier cited the positive aspect of reduced fuel prices and the negative impact of the Mexican peso’s depreciation against the US dollar as factors behind the second-quarter results.

Air Astana posts 1H net loss of $6.6 million
Kazakhstan-based Air Astana reported a 2016 first-half net loss of $6.6 million, reversed from an $8.3 million net profit in the first half of 2015. The airline said the results were driven by a significant devaluation of the Kazakh currency Tenge compared to the first half of 2015, and by weaker regional travel markets in the wake of a commodity price drop.

British Airways cabin crew to vote on industrial action
British Airways (BA) cabin crew will vote on industrial action in response to a new performance scheme, which has triggered fears of future job losses. About 8,800 BA cabin crew, represented by the British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association (BASSA) section of Unite, are calling for the airline to suspend introduction of the “Dashboard Performance Management” scheme.

Lufthansa seeks to buy routes from airberlin for Eurowings
Lufthansa Group is in talks to potentially buy routes from German low-cost carrier (LCC) airberlin, according to a report by German financial newspaper Handelsblatt. If a deal is struck, Lufthansa would hand the routes to its LCC, Eurowings, the paper said. The routes involved would be those outside of airberlin’s Berlin and Düsseldorf hubs.

SriLankan Airlines seeks strategic investor
The Sri Lankan government has called for expressions of interest in the privatization of oneworld member SriLankan Airlines and its low-cost subsidiary, Mihin Lanka. An advert, titled “invitation for expression of interest for the reorientation of SriLankan Airlines and Mihin Lanka,” has been placed in print publications by National Savings Bank subsidiary NSB Fund Management, which is managing the process.

Southwest connects Long Beach, Las Vegas
Southwest Airlines has announced plans to provide travelers with a second route connecting Long Beach, Calif., and Las Vegas. The Las Vegas route is scheduled to start Sept. 18.

United Airlines unveils Polaris concept
United Airlines has offered an advance glimpse of its Polaris business class service which will be available in December. Polaris includes "personal suites" for travelers, including fully flat seats and a work/dining surface.

United Continental Holdings has announced stock buybacks totaling $2 billion. The buyback represents almost 13% of the company's market cap.

Wizz Air posts 54.2% 1Q profit jump
Eastern European low-cost carrier Wizz Air reported a first-quarter net income of €50.7 million ($56 million), up 54.2% from a €32.9 million profit in the year-ago period. Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said the results demonstrate the resilience of the airline’s business model.

DOT proposes four US airlines for daytime slots at Tokyo Haneda
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) on July 20 gave tentative approval to American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines as proposed final candidates for daytime service to Tokyo Haneda Airport. US departure cities proposed by DOT are Los Angeles, Honolulu, San Francisco and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

F-15E demonstrates new display system
Boeing demonstrated an improved display computer system on a US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles earlier this month, uniting the host of upgrades the service will implement on its F-15Es and F-15Cs. On 8 July , the F-15E recorded its first flight with the Advanced Display Core Processor. The high-speed processor can handle new capabilities on the fighter including a long-range infrared search and track capability and an improved electronic warfare suite called the Eagle Passive/Active Warning Survivability System, a July 20 air force press release states.

USAF sets up process for Scorpion airworthiness testing
The US Air Force is moving ahead with an airworthiness assessment of the Scorpion, a dual light attack fighter and trainer aircraft funded by Textron AirLand. Textron and the air force signed a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA), allowing the service for the first time to certificate the aircraft’s airworthiness in the absence of a programme of record, according to a 15 July news release.
