Boeing confirms development of midrange commercial aircraft
Boeing is pursuing plans to develop a new aircraft for the midmarket to become available in the mid-2020s. "We have all the things we sort of need to put the airplane together," said Boeing's Mike Delaney.

Airbus sets stage for A350-2000 launch decision
Only one piece remains missing in the long-term portfolios of Airbus and Boeing widebody products as the two companies enter the Farnborough air show – and it could remain purposefully obscure for at least a while longer. Boeing shifted the market for the upper-end of the twin-engined widebodies in November 2013 at the Dubai air show, launching the 777-9 as a re-engined and re-winged stretch of the franchise-leading, 350-seat 777-300ER, taking the seat count up by 50.

Aegean Airlines and TAP Portugal join Airlines for Europe
Greek carrier Aegean Airlines and Portuguese flag carrier TAP Portugal have become the latest airlines to join lobby group Airlines for Europe (A4E). A4E launched in January 2016, with the support of founding members Air France-KLM, UK budget carrier easyJet, International Airlines Group, Lufthansa Group and Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair.

American Airlines continues expansion of trans-Pacific routes
American Airlines soon connect Los Angeles and Auckland with daily flights, the latest move in the airline's steady expansion of tans-Pacific flights in recent years. "American Airlines network from the UK continues to expand with new 1 stop connections from London Heathrow to Auckland via Los Angeles," said American's David Thomas.

Delta Air Lines Warns On Revenue
Delta Air Lines on Tuesday forecast far higher second-quarter fuel costs, slashed its operating margin outlook, and said Q2 unit revenue likely fell around 5%, worse than an April forecast for a 2.5%-4.5% decline. The carrier also said that consolidated unit revenue fell 5% in June, citing in part continued foreign exchange pressures.

Brexit triggers easyJet to seek another AOC
UK budget carrier easyJet is formally seeking another air operator’s certificate (AOC) outside of the UK following the June 23 vote to exit the European Union (EU), or Brexit. “As part of easyJet’s contingency planning before the referendum, we had informal discussions with a number of European aviation regulators about the establishment of an AOC in a European country to enable easyJet to fly across Europe as we do today. EasyJet has now started a formal process to acquire an AOC,” the airline said in a statement.

Norwegian dips into wet-lease marketplace
Scandinavian low-cost carrier (LCC) Norwegian Air Shuttle will wet lease up to 10 aircraft to cope with demand on its routes this summer. It will also offer refunds to any passengers disappointed about not traveling on Norwegian’s own aircraft. The LCC has pulled in aircraft—mainly Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s, but also some Fokker 100s, from several European airlines including British charter Titan Airways, Portuguese charter Hi Fly, Slovakia’s Go2Sky and Germany’s Avanti Air.

SkyWork Airlines begins Saab 2000 operations
Switzerland-based regional SkyWork Airlines took delivery of its first Saab 2000 turboprop, and launched the first flight July 1 from Bern to London City via EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg. SkyWork said the aircraft arrived in Bern two months behind schedule, which led to some short-term operational disruptions. Bottlenecks were alleviated by temporarily leasing an additional Dornier 328 aircraft.

United Airlines resumes New Zealand service
United Airlines is returning to New Zealand after a layoff of more than a decade with a new route connecting San Francisco and Auckland aboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. "This market is quite famous for high-value leisure travel - you have people who have high discretionary income on both sides of the Pacific and people will pay for luxury," said United's Dave Hilfman.

John Wayne Airport sees surge in international travelers
John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif., saw passenger numbers increase by 13% in May to 949,280. The growth included a 76% spike in international travelers.

Military

New Delhi issues tri-service MALE UAV requirement
India’s ministry of defense (MOD) has issued a combined tri-service requirement for the acquisition of up to 150, medium altitude long endurance (MALE) UAVs. An MOD request for information has called for the UAVs to be procured under the “Make in India” initiative from Indian companies.
