Boeing 737 Max set for flying debut at Farnborough
A Boeing 737 Max 8 test aircraft will appear at the Farnborough airshow and perform in the flying display, marking the re-engined type’s debut at a public event. The CFM International Leap-1B-powered 737 Max 8 will join an All Nippon Airways 787-9 equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines in the flying display at Farnborough. The 737 Max 8 will participate in flying displays from 11-14 July, while the 787-9 will appear from 11-13 July.

Russia and China establish JV to design new widebody aircraft
Russia and China signed an agreement during Russian president Vladimir Putin’s visit to China June 25 to establish a joint venture (JV) to design and develop new widebody aircraft. The agreement stipulates the joint design, manufacture, marketing and after-sale support of new aircraft. The Russian-Chinese JV is expected to develop a widebody family, although the number of aircraft it will include was not disclosed.

Air Canada is praising the passage of a Canadian law that will enable the airline more freedom in deciding where maintenance is performed.

Alaska Airlines to offer even more destinations, travel options
Alaska Airlines and Japan Airlines are planning to enter a new codeshare agreement that will take effect by the end of the month. The agreement, if approved by regulators, will cover key US hubs for Alaska Airlines, including San Francisco, Vancouver and Los Angeles.

American Airlines is offering travelers round-trip fares to Cuba for less than $300 as the carrier awaits final government approval for regular service connecting Miami and five Cuban destinations. Service is scheduled to begin

easyJet Warns On Third-Quarter Profit
easyJet has warned on third-quarter profit, blaming the impact of continued strike action by French air traffic controllers, runway and congestion issues at Gatwick airport and severe weather. The firm said these incidents, together with the recent Egyptair tragedy, had resulted in some drop off in consumer demand leading to lower yield and had impacted third-quarter profit before tax by about GBP£28 million (USD$37.5 million).

Investigation launched into Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 fire
The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has launched an investigation into the June 27 Singapore Airlines (SIA) Boeing 777 fire at Singapore Changi Airport. CAAS’s Air Accident Investigation Bureau will lead the probe “and will get to the bottom of the matter,” Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in a statement.

Singapore Air Flight Catches Fire At Changi
A Singapore Airlines to Milan caught fire early on Monday after returning to Singapore's Changi airport following an engine oil warning message but all passengers were safe, the airline and airport officials said. The aircraft's right engine caught fire after the aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, touched down at Changi airport at around 06:50 local time. Emergency services put out the fire and there were no injuries to the 222 passengers and 19 crew on board, an SIA statement said.

TUI Says UK EU Exit To Hit Profits
European travel group TUI, which makes about a third of its turnover in Britain, expects a dent to its profits because of the fall in the pound after Britain's decision to leave the European Union but does not see a big change in travel habits. TUI chief financial officer Horst Baier told Germany's Boersen Zeitung that the company had hedged against currency volatility and the oil price for the 2016/17 financial year.

After Attacks, Tunisia's Tourism Struggles
A year after 39 mostly British tourists were gunned down on a beach in Sousse, Tunisia's tourist industry is still struggling to recover from the attack and an earlier Islamic State raid on a museum in Tunis. The Imperial Marhaba hotel attacked by Saifeddine Rezgui remains closed, and other hotels have also closed as British tour groups, once among the resort's main visitors, stay away.

Melbourne Airport trials self-boarding international gates
Melbourne Airport (MEL) has completed a three-month trial of self-boarding gates on selected international flights at Terminal 2. The system allows passengers to board an aircraft by scanning in a pre-checked boarding pass when the gate opens. MEL uses IT provider SITA’s Common Use Platform to provide departure services, including self-service check-in kiosks and automated bag drop throughout the airport.

DARPA revives turbine-ramjet concept for hypersonics
A turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) propulsion system to enable routine hypersonic flight by a vehicle that can take-off and land from a runway is back on the agenda at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) after a five-year hiatus. The experimenting agency has set a “proposers day” on 13-14 July for potential bidders of the Advanced Full Range Engine (AFRE) program, which is scheduled to launch as a new-start effort in Fiscal 2017.

Su-30 MKI flies first sortie with BrahMos missile
An Indian air force Sukhoi Su-30 MKI aircraft has carried a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile aloft for the first time, a key milestone toward the eventual deployment of the capability. The twin-seat aircraft carried the 2,500kg missile during a 45 minute sortie from the Hindustan Aeronautics airport in Bengaluru, said the Indian aerospace firm in a statement.
