EgyptAir Loss Strengthens Case For Ejectable Data Recorders
The crash of EgyptAir MS804 has strengthened the case for data recorders that can be ejected out of an aircraft before an accident, removing the need for seabed searches, a senior Airbus engineer said. Investigators are searching in some of the deepest waters of the Mediterranean for flight recorders from the EgyptAir Airbus A320 which crashed on May 19, killing 66 people.

French air traffic controllers to strike again
European carriers are bracing for further disruption, as France’s air traffic controllers plan another walkout which threatens to be the worst of 2016. Eurocontrol is warning that French air traffic control (ATC) could be affected by a French public services strike from 0400UTC on June 2 until 0400UTC on June 3.

Aeromexico, First Carrier in Latin America to Join TSA PreCheck
Aeromexico, Mexico's global airline, announced on May 21, that it became the first airline in Latin America authorized by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to join the program that provides expedited screening for low-risk passengers, and that will allow Aeromexico customers to enjoy a better travel experience on flights from any airport in the United States to any airport in Mexico.

American Airlines revamps 401(k)s after merger
American Airlines Group introduced two revamped 401(k) investment menus for employees after completing its merger with US Airways. One 401(k) is exclusively for pilots, while the other retirement plan is for the rest of the carrier's employees. Fidelity Investments manages both the 401(k)s.

ANA takes $109 million stake in Vietnam Airlines
Japanese major All Nippon Airways (ANA) has finalized its agreement to take an 8.8% stake in Vietnamese flag carrier Vietnam Airlines, worth VND2.43 trillion ($109 million). ANA will also take one seat on the board of Vietnam Airlines. The agreement, to be concluded in July 2016, follows an MOU signed earlier in 2016 that outlined an increase in codeshare and other joint operational issues between the two carriers.

Finnair To Add Aircraft To Meet Demand
Finnair is considering adding more aircraft to its fleet as it attracts more passengers from Asia, with only a small impact on travel demand from recent terrorist attacks. "We are currently looking for some additional (Airbus A321s)," Pekka Vauramo, Finnair chief executive said in an interview on the sidelines of the annual IATA meeting.

United to unveil upgraded business-class seats
United Airlines will reportedly unveil its upgraded business-class seat on Thursday. Experts say the seats on the carrier's Boeing 777-300ERs will be a mix of angled and forward-facing seats.

United to offer nonstop flight to Hangzhou, China
United Continental Holdings plans to offer nonstop routes to Hangzhou, China, in July. The carrier recently started service to Xi'an, China. Brian Znotins, vice president of network for United, said "the secondary cities are the growth engine" for China's booming economy.

WestJet exercises nine Q400 options
WestJet has ordered nine Bombardier Q400 turboprops, exercising its remaining options for the aircraft. The Calgary-based carrier’s regional subsidiary WestJet Encore will increase its fleet to 45 Q400s with the order. Deliveries are scheduled for 2017 and 2018.

Hamburg's cluster philosophy
Hamburg may be best known in aviation circles for having one of Airbus’s two European final assembly lines but the region around the Finkenwerder plant is also home to the third biggest aerospace cluster in the world after Seattle and Toulouse, with 40,000 employees (counting Airbus) and some 300 suppliers, service providers, research establishments and engineering and design houses. Focused largely on the European airframer, but also on Boeing, Bombardier and Embraer, they range from Zodiac, Lufthansa Technik and Diehl Aerosystems to small family concerns.

Fourth Moscow airport officially launched
Zhukovsky International Airport officially opened in the southeast of Moscow May 30. It is the fourth international airport in the Moscow region. First flight is planned for June 20, the airport said. It will be performed by Bishkek-based Kyrgyzstan flag carrier Air Kyrgyzstan. The first destination has not been disclosed. Kazakhstan-based SCAT Airlines also signed an agreement with the airport for an opening ceremony.

Northrop offers inertial upgrade for King Airs
Northrop Grumman is to offer its LCR-100 series of inertial instruments on Textron Aviation’s Beechcraft King Air turboprops. Beechcraft has chosen Northrop’s LCR-100N hybrid navigation unit as an option on the aircraft, with it being certified and applied initially to King Air special mission variants.

USAF calls for a "penetrating counterair" study in 2017
The US military will lose air superiority by 2030 unless a host of new capabilities and sweeping changes to acquisition processes can be adopted and fielded within the next 14 years, including a new penetrating counter-air system, the US Air Force says in a newly-released strategy document.
