French ATCs to strike again May 26, three days in June
French air traffic controllers (ATCs) will strike again Thursday, May 26, the 48th strike day in France since 2009. As in previous strikes, French ATCs will work on educed capacity for at least 24 hours from Thursday morning, Airlines for Europe (A4E) said in a statement. According to A4E, further strikes have been announced from June 3-5 and again on June 14.

Superjet steep-approach approval targeted for 2017
Sukhoi foresees the Superjet 100 being certificated for steep landing approaches at London City airport in 2017. The Russian manufacturer's civil aircraft divisional president Ilya Tarasenko confirms this target, noting the regional airliner will require modifications – including installation of winglets and software changes – for operations from the UK capital's downtown gateway.

Aeromexico Earns Award in Europe for its In-flight Menu Selections
Aeromexico, Mexico's global airline, was recognized by PAX International Readership for its "Outstanding Food Service by a Carrier" at the Aircraft Interiors Expo held in Hamburg, Germany in April this year. This is the second time PAX International invites its readers to participate through an online voting process on the magazine's website to honor the best of the aviation industry with its Readership Awards, and Aeromexico was the only carrier in America to win a recognition in this year's edition.

Air China Introduces its First Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
Boeing and Air China officially unveiled the airline's first 787-9 Dreamliner to the public at a grand ceremony in Beijing today. The national flag carrier is the first airline in the country to have a 787-9 enter into service.

CityJet Takes Delivery Of Sukhoi Superjet
CityJet has become the first western European airline to take delivery of a Sukhoi Superjet 100, pitched to compete internationally with planes made by Embraer and Bombardier. The first of 15 Superjet 100s leased by CityJet was delivered in Venice, the airline said, with the option for 16 more in a deal worth more than USD$1 billion including servicing.

No Sign Of EgyptAir Technical Problems Before Takeoff
The EgyptAir jet that disappeared last week did not show technical problems before taking off from Paris, people within the Egyptian investigation committee said. The people said the plane did not make contact with Egyptian air traffic control, but Egyptian air traffic controllers were able to see it on radar on a border area between Egyptian and Greek airspace known as KUMBI, 260 nautical miles from Cairo.

Etihad Airways Group raises another $500 million
Etihad Airways Group and its partner airlines have raised $500 million in fresh financing, which will be used for capital expenditure, fleet investments and refinancing. The Abu Dhabi-based aviation group kicked off its financing roadshow on May 16. During a series of meetings in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as investor calls with the London, Asian and European markets, Etihad explained its partner airline strategy.

Hawaiian Airlines will offer lie-flat seats in the premium cabin of its Airbus A330s. The cabin is designed with 18 seats in a 2-2-2 configuration.

JetBlue exec: Mint premium product exceeded expectations
Jamie Perry, vice president of marketing for JetBlue Airways, discussed the success of the carrier's Mint premium product. "What we have seen is it has exceeded our expectations," he said. The carrier is expanding the routes that offer Mint service.

Ryanair hits load factor ceiling
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary believes it will be difficult to increase his airline’s load factor above 93%, which it achieved in its 2015-16 financial year. “I think 93% is as high as it can go. I think it will flat line at 93%,” he told journalists at Ryanair’s full-year results briefing in London.

Southwest to start HQ expansion in June
Southwest Airlines plans to begin construction on its headquarters expansion in June. The airline plans to invest more than $150 million in a complex at Dallas Love Field that will include an office building, flight training center and parking garage. The complex is slated for completion in 2018.

TransAsia Airways cuts capacity, routes
Taiwan-based regional airline TransAsia Airways will reduce regional services and schedules to Japanese destinations following a FY2015 operating loss of NT$2.49 billion ($76.8 million). The carrier also plans to mothball two four-year-old Airbus A330-300 aircraft. The carrier said it is making the cuts to “improve finances” after declining profits over the last 12 months on the heels of two fatal crashes in 2014 and 2015 that killed a total of 91 people.

WestJet, Qantas unveil reciprocal frequent flyer agreement
Today WestJet and Qantas Airways (Qantas) announced a reciprocal frequent flyer agreement where members of the airlines' frequent flyer programs can earn their choice of WestJet dollars or Qantas Points when travelling on flights of either airline. This agreement expands on the existing code-share relationship between Qantas and WestJet announced in 2014.

Wizz fleet plan shows scale of shift to A321
Central European budget carrier Wizz Air will not configure all of its Airbus A321neos with the maximum 239-seat layout, according to its current fleet plan. The airline has signed for 110 of the jets, deliveries of which are due to begin with four aircraft in 2019-20.

China To Encourage Airlines To Go International
China will further expand air rights and improve the way it allocates international routes to domestic airlines as it tries to encourage them to participate in the international market. A policy document published on the China Civil Aviation Administration website said China aimed to become a "strong civil aviation nation" but it still faced a large number of difficulties, including insufficient safety resources and a "crude way of development".

The Internet of Things is helping to smooth air travel in a variety of ways. Miami International Airport installed beacons to provide directions within its mobile app, while developers are creating "smart luggage" that can be tracked remotely.

Military

Swedish air force considers trainer options
Sweden’s air force commander hopes to advance a competition to replace the service’s Saab 105 (Sk 60) jet trainers from late this decade, while it also works to extend the life of its veteran air transport fleet. “We are planning for replacing our trainers,” says Maj Gen Mats Helgesson; a former Saab Viggen and Gripen pilot who took command of the Swedish air force in October. “The Sk 60 has 50 years of service and is a really good aircraft, but we will pretty soon need to replace them.” Sweden operates around 50 of the jet-powered type.
