Russia and Spain to increase designated carriers, frequencies
Russian and Spanish aviation authorities have agreed to increase the number of designated carriers for Moscow-Barcelona service from three to five for each side. Rosaviatsia said it has increased the number of frequencies from 42 to 57 per week for each side. The additional frequencies will be allocated to newly designated carriers.

Aegean Airlines takes final A320ceo, invests in training
Aegean Airlines, which recently took delivery of its seventh and final Airbus A320ceo, is in the final stages of installing an A320 flight simulator training facility in Athens, Aegean MD Dimitris Gerogiannis said at the A320ceo handover ceremony. The Greece-based carrier operates 47 A320 family aircraft. “We have a simulator in Munich, and a fixed base A320 simulator, and we are also in the final stages of installing an A320 simulator in Athens.

Air Canada resumes service connecting YYZ & SLC
Air Canada will resume service between Toronto and Salt Lake City International Airport with daily flights beginning May 27. "It gives Salt Lake City access to global markets that it did not otherwise have," said Kevin Howlett, senior vice president for regional markets at the carrier.

American increases flight attendant pay by 6%
American Airlines has announced a 6% pay increase for its 25,000 flight attendants. The announcement comes a day following the disclosure of plans to offer profit sharing companywide. "We are making this adjustment now because none of us expected our flight attendants to have to wait this long to receive that increase," said CEO Doug Parker.

Cathay Pacific’s first A350-900 completes maiden flight
The first A350-900 for Cathay Pacific Airways has completed its maiden flight in Toulouse, France, Airbus said in a statement. The aircraft will now enter the final phase of production including cabin completion, further ground checks and test flights before being prepared for delivery in the second quarter of the year.

El Al Israel Airlines rebounds with $106 million 2015 net profit
El Al Israel Airlines posted a $106.5 million net profit for 2015, reversing a 2014 net loss of $28 million as passenger numbers increased 7.6% over the year. In 2014, El Al saw its profits tumble by over $55 million year-over-year (YOY) following disruptions caused by Israel’s military operations against Palestinian forces in Gaza that summer. Inbound tourism to the region dropped 20% in the latter half of 2014.

Malaysia set to boost seat allowance to Indian destinations
The Malaysian government is looking to boost the number of seats available to airlines flying between Malaysia and India. Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said the air services agreement (ASA) between the two countries—some 20,000 seats per week—is being fully utilized, and it is time for a review.

Meridiana seeks to end losses this year
Italian carrier Meridiana is targeting breakeven this year after several years of heavy losses. The Sardinia-based airline, which was taken private by its owners and de-listed from the Italian stock exchange last year, made an EBIT loss of €43 million ($48 million) in 2015, a considerable improvement on the 2014 deficit of €145 million.

Republic, Delta to restructure codeshare relationship
Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings, the parent company of regional carriers Republic Airlines and Shuttle America, has reached an agreement with Delta Air Lines to “holistically restructure the parties’ codeshare relationship.” According to Republic, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February, this is a “significant first step toward achieving the goals established at the outset of this case, and upon approval by the court, will deliver immediate improvements in profitability and cash flow for Republic.”

Brazil’s Azul makes $90 million investment in TAP Portugal
Azul Brazilian Airlines has acquired $90 million in convertible bonds in TAP Portugal, the equivalent of 40% of the economic value of TAP Portugal, spokesperson Isabela Palma said. The transaction is pending approval from Portuguese civil aviation authority ANAC.

Brussels Airport closure continues
Brussels Airport will now be closed through Sunday at least, in the wake of the terrorist attack there on March 22. The airport said March 25 that it was still uncertain when forensic investigators would finish their work in the terminal and the airport authorities would regain access to the building.

UK's Boeing P-8 purchase gets US tick of approval
The UK has moved a step closer to filling a maritime patrol void left by the retirement of the Nimrod MR2 in 2010 after being approved by the US State Department to acquire nine torpedo-carrying Boeing P-8A Poseidons for the Royal Air Force. Estimated to be worth $3.2 billion, the deal is unlikely to face opposition from Congress during the 30-day notification period as the advanced, radar-carrying submarine and surface ship hunter is already being exported to Australia and India.
