Turboprop manufacturer ATR has opened a representative office in Beijing, as it aims to tap into the potentially lucrative Chinese market. The move was foreshadowed at the Franco-Italian manufacturer’s annual press conference in January when CEO Patrick de Castelbajac announced a substantial increase in the company’s activities in China.

Aeromexico signs up for Rockwell Collins flight tracking service
Aeromexico has become the launch customer for a global airliner flight tracking tool produced by Rockwell Collins. The ARINC MultiLink service was unveiled in March and has recently completed a number of trials. The service, announced earlier this year, offers a comprehensive and cost-effective global flight tracking solution.

Copa Airlines Celebrates 100th Airplane with Special Livery
Copa Airlines (CPA) took delivery of the 100th airplane to join its fleet, a Boeing 737-800 decorated with a special decal celebrating the airline achieving this important milestone. The airplane, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, flew from Seattle to its Panama City home base, where it was welcomed by a special ceremony.

JetBlue deploys iPads for maintenance workers
JetBlue Airways is utilizing Maintenance Mobility from Airbus, which allows maintenance workers to access information on iPads. "By having access to aircraft technical data on a portable device we will improve dispatch reliability and on-time performance of our Airbus fleet," said Marco Nogueira, director of maintenance for JetBlue.

JetBlue debuts daily service from Fla. city to Turks and Caicos
JetBlue has begun its new daily service between Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, the carrier announced. Fort Lauderdale is the third city from which JetBlue is now offering service to Turks and Caicos, along with Boston and New York. “We’re thrilled to introduce new service from sunny Ft. Lauderdale to one of the most stunning islands in the Caribbean,” said Jason Annunziata, director of airport operations for Ft. Lauderdale.

Was the TAM merger a mistake for LAN?
LATAM Airlines Group, created by the 2012 merger of Chile’s LAN Airlines and Brazil’s TAM, is going through a rough patch. Its net loss through the first nine months of 2015 topped $200 million, prompting LATAM to embark on a restructuring of its 2016-2018 fleet plan that aims to save $3 billion by deferring aircraft deliveries and selling aircraft. Its fleet commitments for the three-year period are being reduced by 40%.

China To Contribute AUD$20 Million To MH370 Search
China will contribute AUD$20 million (USD$14.5 million) to the hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, in the latest expansion of one of the costliest search missions in aviation history. Chinese premier Li Keqiang made the announcement at a summit of Asia-Pacific, during a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, a statement said.

Singapore Air Flight From US Lands Safely After Bomb Threat
Singapore Airlines said there was a bomb threat to one of its flights which originated from San Francisco and landed safely at Singapore's Changi Airport on Sunday. The airline, in a statement, did not provide any details of how the threat came to light or what action was taken to ensure the flight's safety. It said the matter had been referred to the authorities.

Southwest Plane Diverted Over 'Unruly' Passengers
A Southwest Airlines flight from Indianapolis to Los Angeles was diverted to Kansas City and searched on Sunday because several passengers were behaving suspiciously, the FBI said. "The flight crew diverted the flight to Kansas City out of an abundance of caution based upon suspicious behaviour displayed by several passengers," FBI spokesperson Bridget Patton in Kansas City said in a statement.

No Bomb Found On Turkish Air Plane Diverted To Canada
No explosives were found on a Turkish Airlines flight diverted to Halifax, Nova Scotia after a bomb threat, with the plane cleared to continue its journey. The Turkish Airlines plane had been diverted after a threat was received at 10:50 pm EST on Saturday evening, the Nova Scotia branch of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said on Twitter. The plane landed safely and police said they searched it using dogs.

Thai Airways reports mounting losses in 3Q
Thai Airways International posted a third-quarter net loss of THB9.9 billion ($246 million), reversed from a third-quarter $36.2 million net profit in the year-ago period. The airline said the results were due to foreign exchange losses caused by a weak currency and a drop in overall cargo volumes. Third-quarter revenue fell 4.4% to $1.23 billion leading to an overall nine-month net loss of $514 million despite a traffic rise by 8.8% to 5.15 million passengers in the July-September quarter.

United, pilots union reach tentative agreement on contract extension
United Continental Holdings reached a tentative deal on a two-year contract extension with the Air Line Pilots Association. "The fact that we were able to reach this agreement in principle in fewer than 30 days is a direct result of the positive, collaborative relationship between ALPA leadership and United," said Mike Bonds, executive vice president of human resources and labor relations.

Etihad seeks to reduce fog disruption at Abu Dhabi
Etihad Airways has signed a research agreement with Abu Dhabi’s Masdar Institute of Science and Technology to develop a fog prediction and monitoring system at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai International Airport can suffer from dense coastal fog, especially in late autumn and early spring. With the volumes of traffic passing through both hubs, even a brief shutdown can result in many thousands of passengers being delayed or diverted.

Iraqi airports closed over cruise missile warning
Carriers operating over northern Iraq are being warned about the possibility of cruise missiles being used in the region. The advisory, contained in a NOTAM for the Baghdad flight information, warns of cruise missile activity, crossing the Kurdistan region from the Caspian Sea to Syria.

Manila Airport loses $2 billion due to APEC
Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International (NAI) Airport reported an estimated $2 billion loss in airline revenue and canceled more than 1,000 flights due to the recent geopolitical summit of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders in Manila, Philippines. Attendees at the three-day APEC summit included China’s President Xi Jinping, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and US President Barack Obama. Security measures included sealing off one runway and closing many sections of airport facilities, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of flights at the Philippines’ busiest and already congested airport.

UK to obtain nine P-8 maritime patrol aircraft
The UK is set to announce plans to obtain nine Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, as well as extend the service life of the Royal Air Force’s Eurofighter Typhoon fighters. The P-8 acquisition and Typhoon life extenstion will be part of a £178 billion ($270 billion) investment that will be made in defence equipment and support over the next ten years, says a statement from the prime minister’s office.

Lockheed-built X-56A crashes at USAF test range
One of two Lockheed Martin X-56A unmanned testbed aircraft built to trial new flutter-suppression technology for high-aspect-ratio wings has crashed at the Rogers Dry Lake test range in California, the US air force has disclosed. The Multi-Utility Technology Testbed, or MUTT, aircraft that is appropriately named Fido bit the dust at approximately 9.30am local time on 19 November at the Edwards AFB range.
