Boeing, ViaSat ink technical agreement
Boeing has inked a technical agreement with ViaSat that allows customers to order aircraft with built-in ViaSat connectivity. "This will give Boeing's commercial airline customers a new cost- and time-effective high-bandwidth connectivity choice for their airplanes," said John Craig, chief engineer of cabin and network systems for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Embraer revamps assembly process on first E2 jet
A well-practised industrial choreography is being repeated this autumn within Embraer’s E-Jet manufacturing base in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. This time, the dance involves the first copy of an improved new product – the re-engined and re-winged Embraer 190 E2 – moving through the final stages of the E-Jet family’s newly revamped production system.

Russia’s Aeroflot will initiate and fully subscribe to a capital increase in Orenair subsidiary as part of the group’s multi-brand renewal strategy. Orenair provides flights to leisure destinations.

Alaska launches nonstop SeaTac-JFK service
Alaska Airlines inaugurates new service from Seattle to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, offering double miles for Alaska Airline Mileage Plan members for a limited time. Customers must travel between Sept. 16 and Oct. 28, 2015, to take advantage of the double miles offer.

Alitalia CEO Silvano Cassano resigns, effective immediately
Alitalia confirmed that CEO Silvano Cassano will step down, effective immediately. Cassano, who is leaving for personal reasons, formally tendered his resignation to the board of directors on Friday. Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo will fill the role until the board appoints a new CEO.

Delta raises $1.7M for American Cancer Society
Delta Air Lines donated more than $1.7 million to the American Cancer Society this year, setting a new company record. "Our goal was an aggressive $1.5 million this year, and thanks to the more than 45,000 employees and customers around the world who supported the 2015 campaign, we continue to raise the bar," said Bill Lentsch, senior vice president of airport customer service and cargo operations at the carrier.

Etihad raises additional $200 million for group partners
Etihad Airways and its equity partner airlines have raised an additional $200 million following a surge in demand from international financial institutions, bringing the total funds raised to $700 million.

Flybe takes delivery of first leased ATR 72-600
UK regional Flybe introduced its first ATR 72-600 series aircraft into its fleet, on lease from Avation PLC. It will operate from Sweden in the livery of Flybe’s new partner in Northern Europe, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). During 2015 and 2016, Flybe said it will incorporate into the SAS network five new 70-seat ATR 72-600s leased from Avation.

Ryanair denies CAA claims of passenger rights breach
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it would be taking legal steps to ensure Ryanair changed its policy on paying flight delay compensation. Ryanair has responded to the CAA, saying that threatened enforcement action for breach of consumer law is “unnecessary.”

Southwest reaches tentative agreement with pilots union
Southwest Airlines and its pilots union have reached a tentative agreement on a contract through 2019. Union members will vote on ratification of the contract on Nov. 4. "Everyone on both sides of the table worked hard to fashion a contract that recognizes and rewards the steadfast professionalism of our Pilots," said Craig Drew, vice president of flight operations for Southwest.

Southwest gives sneak peek of Hobby international terminal
Southwest Airlines allowed a sneak peek for the media of its new international airport terminal at Hobby Airport in Houston. "Every other seat (at the gate) has an electrical connection so that you can charge your phones or your iPad," said Denise McElroy of Southwest Airlines. The terminal will open in less than a month

Western Global MD-11 catches fire in Michigan hangar
Three people sustained "serious" injuries after a fire ignited on 17 September in the cargo hold of a Boeing MD-11 freighter operated by Western Global Airlines, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration. The fire occurred on the ground at about 15:50 local time, while the aircraft was undergoing maintenance in a hangar in Oscoda, Michigan, according to the FAA's preliminary report.

Fortress Group May Buy Aeroportos Brasil Stake
Fortress Investment Group and two partners have offered to buy Brazilian engineer UTC's stake in Aeroportos Brasil, which controls Brazil's Viracopos airport, a person with knowledge of the matter said. New York-based Fortress has teamed up with builder WTorre and Sao Paulo-based investment firm Invixx to buy 45 percent of Aeroportos Brasil, said the person, who requested anonymity as discussions are ongoing. The person said the stake could cost the group about BRR550 million reais (USD$141 million).

JetBlue partners to build a hotel at JFK
JetBlue Airways and partner MCR Development were chosen as the winning bidders to build a hotel in an empty terminal at John F. Kennedy airport in New York. The hotel will feature 505 rooms in the former TWA terminal, built in the 1960s by noted architect Eero Saarinen.

Thailand orders four T-50 trainers
The Royal Thai Air Force has ordered four Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI)/Lockheed Martin T-50TH supersonic trainers, with delivery reported to be by 2018. The contract was confirmed in a Facebook post from KAI, although no more details have as yet been disclosed by the company or Lockheed
