Boeing 757 ecoDemonstrator embarks on final test run
Energy-harvesting windows, green diesel biofuel and a 3D-printed flightdeck monument are three technologies that will be tested on the last series of flights of a TUI Group-branded Boeing 757 ecoDemonstrator destined to be dismantled by the end of July. Boeing has partnered with the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association to disassemble the 757 at the conclusion of the tests.

Aeroflot to transfer 13 737-800s to LCC Pobeda Airline
Russia’s Aeroflot will transfer 13 Boeing 737-800s to its low-cost subsidiary (LCC) Pobeda Airline on a long-term sublease. The transfer was approved by Aeroflot shareholders at its annual general meeting. Aeroflot signed a contract for 50 800s to be leased from Russian State Corp. Rostec (Rostechnology) in 2012. In 2013, the first aircraft was delivered to the carrier. According to Aeroflot, its fleet now includes nine 737-800s; Pobeda’s fleet consists of 12 aircraft of the type and operates flights to 34 destinations in Russia.

AirAsia to add Filipino international hub
The low-cost carrier (LCC) will begin service by September, and will fly from Iloilo International Airport to Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport in the Fujian province and Incheon International Airport, in Seoul, South Korea.

Avianca Brazil to join Star Alliance July 22
Avianca Brazil will join the Star Alliance network July 22, Star CEO Mark Schwab has confirmed at a press briefing in Warsaw. “We have been working on an [airline] solution in Brazil for some time now,” said Schwab, adding that Avianca Brazil has fulfilled all membership requirements.

Delta strikes 3-year sponsorship deal with Chelsea Football Club
Atlanta-based Delta (NYSE: KO) and Chelsea FC, the English Premier League and Capital One Cup champions, first partnered in 2012. Delta is now the “Official Airline Partner of Chelsea FC” and gets LED exposure at each home game and on the Chelsea FC website.

EasyJet and Ryanair push for cheaper onboard connectivity
Europe's two leading low-cost airlines EasyJet and Ryanair are both evaluating onboard wi-fi but are not prepared to move until pricing is reduced. EasyJet's head of operational systems Simon Lamkin says the airline expects to introduce onboard connectivity but is in no rush to begin installing it on the fleet as it waits for the appropriate technology and pricing structure.

Fastjet sells Fly540 Ghana
African budget carrier fastjet has sold its shares in grounded loss-making regional carrier Fly540 Ghanato DWG-G Company for $1. Fastjet acquired Fly540 Ghana from Lonrho Aviation in July 2012 with the aim of using the carrier’s air operator’s certificate (AOC) to launch low-cost operations under its own fastjet brand. However, this has not happened and Fly540 Ghana has continued to rack up losses, which totaled $11.3 million at pre-tax level in 2014.

UK's Jet2.com spearheads effort to curtail disruptive passenger behavior
UK leisure airline Jet2.com is spearheading a drive for industry-wide measures to tackle what it describes as a “shocking rise” in disruptive passenger behavior. The airline said that over the past two years, unruly and disorderly behavior—often linked to excessive alcohol consumption prior to embarkation—had “risen drastically on-board aircraft.”

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is launching a $430 million renovation effort. The renovation will include both interior and exterior work, including canopies to cover loading areas and better illumination.

New pharmaceutical cold storage is opened by American Airlines at Pa. airport
American Airlines has opened a cold storage facility at Philadelphia International Airport to temporarily hold pharmaceutical and health care materials during transport. "We're talking about a patient at the other end. It's not just a matter of making sure it doesn't get destroyed in route, but also when it gets to them that it has the therapeutic effectiveness that it needs to have," said Thomas Grubb, American Airlines manager of cold chain strategy.

A400M deliveries resume, as airdrop testing nears
The French air force’s seventh of an eventual 50 A400M tactical transports has touched down at its Orléans-Bricy air base, as the service gets ready to support airdrop testing involving the Airbus Defence & Space type. Accepted by the DGA defence procurement agency in Seville, Spain, on 19 June, aircraft MSN19 is the first French air force example to be received in a new configuration capable of performing the airdrop of equipment.

F-35B demonstrates short take-off capability
The UK and USA have carried out the first short take-off test of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II during a ground-based test at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland, USA on 19 June. This marks the start of the first phase of testing to certify the UK’s short take-off and vertical landing F-35B as capable of take off and landing from an aircraft carrier. The work is being controlled by the F-35 Pax River Integrated Test Force (ITF), assigned to the Air Test and Evaluation Sqn 23.
