Pilot projects bring prospect of UAVs in civil airspace closer
Although unmanned air vehicles are entering their second decade of widespread operation with militaries worldwide, the civil arena has yet to completely embrace them. Operating UAVs in US civil airspace requires an extraordinary amount of regulatory co-operation, including a Federal Aviation Administration certificate of authorisation (COA) that precisely defines the timing, routing and operations, and sometimes requires chase aircraft or dedicated air traffic controllers. So far, operators have coped with the issue largely by trying to get around it. Non-military UAV operations have gravitated towards military airspace, as the vehicles need unrestricted airspace to fly in without a COA.

Aviation Quote

My habit of attacking Huns dangling from their parachutes led to many arguments in the mess. Some officers, of the Eton and Sandhurst type, thought it was 'unsportsmanlike' to do it. Never having been to a public school, I was unhampered by such considerations of form. I just pointed out that there was a bloody war on, and that I intended to avenge my pals.

A flight attendant is on the red-eye to Manila when a water leak develops in the galley, which eventually soaks the carpet throughout the aft cabin of the 747. A very sleepy woman who becomes aware of the dampness tugs at the attendant's skirt as she passes by.

“Has it been raining?” she asks the flight attendant.

Keeping a straight face, she replies, “Yes, but we put the top up.”
With a sigh of relief, the woman then goes back to sleep
