Boeing prepares for world tour of 787
Boeing's third-quarter earnings report on 26 October will provide the first concrete details about the company's expectations on the 787's long-term financial health. It will also see the disclosure of Boeing's initial accounting quantity for the new twinjet, which is widely expected to spread its investment over as many as 1,000 deliveries to maintain a position of profitability. "Given the tremendous success of this product in the marketplace with more than 820 airplanes in backlog, the initial accounting quantity will be substantially higher than previous new program initial quantities," said chief financial officer James Bell in the company's earnings report on 27 July.

Aer Lingus Says Ryanair's Stake Not For Long-Haul
Aer Lingus criticized Ryanair's attempts to call an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) of Aer Lingus shareholders and said on Thursday its rival's 29 percent stake in the airline should not be maintained in the long run. The two Dublin-based airlines have been locked in a bitter war of words for months over Aer Lingus' large pension deficit and the absence of a dividend payment by Aer Lingus.

Southwest falls to 3Q loss on fuel hedging mark-downs
Owing to $227 million in unrealized, noncash fuel hedging mark-downs, Southwest Airlines (SWA) incurred a third-quarter net loss of $140 million, reversed from a $205 million profit in the year-ago period. But the LCC touted a strong revenue performance and pointed out that, excluding special items, third-quarter net income was $122 million.

Norwegian reports ‘best ever’ 3Q earnings
Norwegian Air Shuttle (DY) reported third-quarter consolidated net income of NOK494.9 million ($88.3 million), down 6.3% from NOK528.1 million in the year-ago period when earnings were affected by a currency gain of NOK172 million not related to the operation.

Lufthansa Cargo: ‘Surprise’ Frankfurt night flight ban to cost millions
Lufthansa Cargo (LHC) said the German regional court ruling halting night flights from its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) cargo hub would cost the carrier “double digit million of euros” in rescheduled flights and lost customers.

AMR reports Q3 loss on high fuel prices
AMR Corp., the parent company of American Airlines, posted a third-quarter loss of $162 million, compared with a profit of $143 million in the same period last year. The ailing carrier blames rising fuel prices, which have risen 41% in the same period last year, as well as negative effects of foreign-exchange rates and weak demand. The company is working to cut costs by reducing winter capacity and upgrading its fleet.

JetBlue shares drop after "sudden" departure of CFO
After CFO Ed Barnes resigned abruptly, shares of JetBlue Airways dropped 6.7% on Wednesday. However, analysts say company shares should rally. "Such a sudden and untimely departure of a senior officer may well lead to near-term weakness in JetBlue shares, but we have no reason to think there are problems that should concern shareholders," said James M. Higgins, a Ticonderoga Securities analyst.

American Airlines has expanded its order of Boeing 777-300ERs, show a quarterly disclosure from the carrier. The airline placed an initial order for two Boeing 777-300ERs in January, but the number rose to nine aircraft as of Wednesday.

Airbus, Boeing agree on demand for narrow-body planes
Competitors Airbus and Boeing forecast increased demand in the narrow-body sector during the next two decades. Airbus predicts a demand overall for 27,000 aircraft, while Boeing estimates a demand for 32,500 aircraft. Both carriers agree that about 70% of the aircraft ordered will be single-aisle planes.

European airlines are concerned about retaliation for ETS
Ten leaders of European airlines plan to meet today with Jose Manuel Barroso from the European Union's executive arm to discuss international opposition to the EU emissions trading scheme. "We want to understand what he will do to protect EU airlines in the event of retaliation and to ensure European airlines are not damaged," said Willie Walsh, CEO of International Consolidated Airlines Group.

Some lawmakers find TSA screening system frustrating
Senators from both parties this week expressed their frustration with the Transportation Security Administration's procedure for screening passengers. Some lawmakers said constituents have complained about pat-downs. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the screening measures in place are necessary because terrorists continue to present a threat to the U.S.

TSA asks passengers to sign up for screening interviews
The Transportation Security Administration wants travelers to sign up to participate in its interview program designed to assess suspicious behavior. It is testing the program at airports in Boston and Detroit. Some observers say wait times could be reduced if passengers sign up for the interviews in advance.

Airline expansion takes off in Middle East
Airline expansion in Europe and the U.S. is limited, but Middle Eastern countries such as the United Arab Emirates are building new hubs. In the Jebel Ali region of Dubai, an airport that will have six runways that can serve 150 million passengers a year has been built. The expansion contrasts with London's Heathrow Airport, which declined to add an additional runway.

Boeing has delayed the delivery of China Southern Airlines' (CZ) first 787 from December until July 2012. CZ's order for 10 787s was placed in 2005 with deliveries originally scheduled to begin in 2008.

TAM Airlines has finalized a purchase agreement for 32 Airbus A320 aircraft, comprising 22 A320neo and 10 A320 family aircraft, Airbus said. The order follows an MOUsigned inFebruary. TAM will make an engine selection at a later date.

LOT Polish Airlines spokesman said that the carrier expects its first Boeing 787 delivery to be in 2012, not 2013, as reported by Polish Press Agency PAP earlier this week.

Ryanair (FR) will open a base at Wroclaw Airport (WRO) in March 2012, initially with one Boeing 737-800 and six new routes, bringing its network from the airport to 21 destinations.

FlyNiki will launch 3X-weekly Vienna-Tel Aviv A321 service in February 2012.

Qantas will increase 4X-weekly Sydney-Dallas/Ft. Worth service to 6X-weekly Jan. 15 and to daily July 1.

Frontier Airlines will operate 4X-weekly Kansas City-Orlando Embraer 190 service Jan. 5-April 15, becoming 6X-weekly Feb. 23. It will discontinue Milwaukee-Pittsburgh service Jan. 4.

EasyJet will launch a weekly Luton-Heraklion (Crete) service April 21.
