Delta Air Lines and Virgin Australia Airlines said Friday they welcomed the US Dept. of Transportation's final approval of antitrust immunity for the airlines' transpacific alliance, which will allow the carriers to implement a joint venture on service between the US and Australia. DOT tentatively approved ATI for the carriers last month, reversing its prior opposition.
Several German companies and organizations have launched the Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany, a platform for promoting science and research in the area of climate-friendly aviation fuels, with a main emphasis on sustainability. Founding members comprise airberlin, Lufthansa, Rolls-Royce Germany, EADS, MTU Aero Engines and Munich Airport. Other partners include universities, research institutions, airlines, airports, aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, logistics enterprises and fuel producers. The initiative aims to create a “sound” basis for political decision making with regard to the introduction of climate-friendly aviation fuels.
US Dept. of Transportation said Friday it fined Frontier Airlines $40,000 for failing to display on-time performance for its flights on the carrier’s website in early 2011. “Air travelers have a right to know whether the flight they are buying is chronically delayed or canceled,” said US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg signed an agreement with Uruguay-based carrier Pluna covering maintenance of its CF34-8C5 engines. Pluna operates a CF34-powered fleet of 10 CRJ900 jets. The contract runs until December 2017 and is valued at €20 million ($29.2 million).
Lufthansa Technik signed two agreements with bmi, extending a base maintenance agreement covering 41 aircraft (25 Airbus A320 family aircraft, two A330s and 14 Boeing 737s) as well as forming a new partnership for line maintenance support at London Heathrow, branded, "bmi, partner of Lufthansa Technik." The partnership will provide line maintenance up to (and including) A checks for narrow and widebody aircraft for LH and bmi as well as for present and future external line maintenance customers at LHR.
A J Walter Aviation won a contract with Small Planet Airlines to provide integrated consumables management, supporting charter flight programs from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa this year. The Lithuania-based airline operates a fleet of six Boeing 737-300s and two Airbus A320s. It operates flights to Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and Italy.
