FAA to recruit more varied group of pilots for MAX evaluation
FAA’s plan for how pilots will evaluate changes to the Boeing 737 MAX and new training materials signals a shift from a focus primarily on the carriers it regulates to one that accounts for variations in pilot experience around the world. The agency is finalizing a plan to bring in as many as 30 pilots from a variety of carriers to conduct MAX simulator sessions in the coming weeks, multiple sources with knowledge of the plan tell ATW.

EASA to issue GP7200 engine airworthiness directive
EASA is set to issue an airworthiness directive (AD) on Engine Alliance engines that power Airbus A380s following a similar move by the US FAA after the discovery that a failed GP7200 engine showed a fracture in the fan hub.
“The investigation in this case is led by the BEA in close coordination with experts from EASA and the FAA. Following the recent examination of retrieved engine parts, mandatory actions have been agreed between all involved parties which will call for repeated inspections of the affected engine type,” EASA said.

Boeing stands firm on China completions centre
Even as the worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 Max continues, the airframer's plans for its 737 completion and delivery centre in Zhoushan remain unchanged.
Responding to FlightGlobal's queries, Boeing says there is "no change" in plans for the centre, which, as recently as December last year, delivered its first aircraft, an Air China 737 Max 8.

Eastern Airlines comes back : new logo, JFK hub, triple sevens
MIAMI — The Eastern Air Lines brand seems to be far from gone and forgotten. The iconic and historic airline name will—pending on DOT approval—take off on point-to-point missions to the Caribbean, South America, and even Asia.
In a letter addressed to the airline’s employees, current Eastern Airlines CEO, Steve Harfst, noted that “in support of the development of our new corporate website and the promotion of our new business plan, we have been working very hard getting the new Eastern Airlines ready for take-off.”

Ryanair discusses Armenian routes after Georgia entry
Ryanair is discussing possible entry to the Armenian market next year, as the budget carrier unveiled its first services to Georgia.
Armenian prime minister Nikol Pashinyan and other senior government figures have met with Ryanair management personnel including commercial chief David O'Brien and route development director Kate Sherry.

British Airways pilots announce September strikes
BALPA's British Airways members are to strike on 9, 10 and 27 September.
The UK pilot union says its attempts to resolve an industrial dispute with IAG-owned BA have been rebuffed. The airline's latest offer is unacceptable to BALPA members, it adds.

AirAsia X widens 2Q net loss on reduced capacity
AirAsia X saw losses rise in the second quarter, as the Malaysian LCC continues to keep capacity in check for the parent carrier and focus growth on its Thai affiliate.
The AirAsia X Group reported a 2019 second-quarter net loss of MYR207.1 million ($50 million), widened from a loss of MYR57.5 million in the same period a year earlier. Foreign exchange rate shifts were a major factor, costing the carrier MYR83.1 million.

Amazon inks deal for option to buy stake in Canada’s Cargojet
Amazon and Cargojet—betting on a surge in Canada’s lagging online-shopping growth rate—are teaming up in a deal that will see the e-commerce company commit to a certain level of business for the right to acquire shares in the Canadian cargo specialist. Amazon will be granted warrants to acquire up to 14.5% of Cargojet in exchange for providing a certain amount of business.

Emirates A380 badly damaged during A-check mishap
Emirates is probing a maintenance accident involving one of the carrier's Airbus A380s which received substantial damage during a routine check.
The accident occurred on 20 August, the Dubai-based airline tells FlightGlobal.
Emirates says the aircraft was undergoing an A-check on the jet at the time.

Transat shareholders approve Air Canada buyout
Shareholders of Transat during a meeting on 23 August approved a proposal for Air Canada to acquire all its issued and outstanding shares, a deal that would give Canada's largest carrier opportunity to expand its global network.
A 95% majority of Transat's voting shareholders approved the agreement for Air Canada to buy the parent company of Air Transat for C$18 ($13.53) per share, which would make the cash transaction worth C$720 million.

Ryanair goes head-to-head with Wizz from Southend
Budget carrier Ryanair yesterday announced plans to add Bucharest and Vilnius routes from London Southend – just hours after rival Wizz Air confirmed its intention to serve those same destinations from the UK airport.
Ryanair and Wizz both plan to fly five times weekly to Romanian capital Bucharest from Southend. Lithuanian capital Vilnius will be served twice weekly by Wizz and three times a week by Ryanair.

PICTURE: EgyptAir A220 conducts first flight
EgyptAir's first Airbus A220 has conducted its maiden flight from the manufacturer's Montreal Mirabel assembly facility.
The Egyptian flag carrier is taking 12 A220s under an agreement originally disclosed towards the end of 2017, before Airbus acquired the then-Bombardier CSeries programme.

Hong Kong Airport braces for more disruptions by protesters
The operator of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) received an extension of an injunction against protesters as anti-government activists vowed to “stress test” transportation links to the airport.
In online posts, demonstrators said they plan to disrupt rail, bus and other transportation services to the airport on Aug. 24.

Malaysia Airports stabilizing KLIA system disruption
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) continues to stabilize a system disruption for the second day at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with its Total Airport Management System (TAMS).
The disruption, which began the night of Aug. 21, has resulted in at least 68 flight delays in both terminals.

Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport to construct Terminal 4
Indonesia's Angkasa Pura II (AP II) is set to construct a fourth passenger terminal at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International airport, with the aim of raising overall passenger handling capacity to 110 million passengers annually.
The new terminal will have a handling capacity of up to 45 million passengers annually, far larger than any of the existing terminals, and will be built on 130ha (321 acres) of land now occupied by a golf course, offices, a cargo terminal.
