First new Dornier 328 turboprop expected in 2023
Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC) subsidiary 328 Support Services is going ahead with the relaunch of the Dornier 328 regional turboprop, which will target regional, cargo and special mission use.
The new version, D328NEU, is planned to be assembled in Leipzig/Germany. A new affiliate, DRA GmbH, has been set up for the Leipzig operation, although 328 Support Services remains the type certificate holder.

How Russian Helicopters is expanding its product line
Russian Helicopters is in a curious position with the development of its Kamov Ka-62 medium-twin. The single-rotor helicopter – an anomaly in the Kamov range dominated by co-axial designs – was unveiled in 2012, with a plan to enter service three years later. After multiple delays and a brief hover in 2016, the helicopter completed its first flight in 2017, with the manufacturer subsequently saying that it needed to redesign part of the rotorcraft.

Ryanair averts Irish strike, but faces UK and Spanish walkouts
As Irish LCC Ryanair continues to deal with labor issues among its various pilot and cabin crew unions, passengers are bracing for travel disruptions across Europe through September.

Ryanair has blocked an Irish pilots’ strike and said Portuguese action is having little impact, but a two-day UK pilots’ strike will go ahead Aug. 22-23.

Investigation begins into SWISS Airbus A220 engine incident
A serious incident investigation has begun, after a Pratt & Whitney-powered Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) Airbus A220 experienced an inflight engine failure and a subsequent inspection revealed that the low-pressure compressor (LPC) stage 1 rotor was missing.
The SWISS A220 was performing a scheduled passenger flight from Geneva to London Heathrow at about 1305 local time on July 25 when the crew experienced problems.

Air Belgium boosts transatlantic routes; returns to Hong Kong
Air Belgium is increasing routes to the French Caribbean, adding two transatlantic destinations, and making a comeback to China.
On Dec. 7, Air Belgium plans to resume scheduled Airbus A340-300s flights with twice-weekly Brussels South Charleroi-Fort-de-France; Martinique-Pointe-à-Pitre; and Guadeloupe-Charleroi services.

ANA expands international network, continues fleet upgrade
All Nippon Airways (ANA) will add three new international routes from Tokyo Narita Airport by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2020, as the Japanese carrier continues to grow its international network.
The airline is scheduled to launch flights from Narita to Perth, Australia, on Sept. 1, the only direct service on this route. ANA also plans to introduce flights from Narita to Chennai, India, on Oct. 27, 2019, and to Vladivostok, Russia, in March 2020 (2019 winter schedule).

Cathay expects ‘significant’ impact to August revenue on protests
Cathay Pacific Airways predicts revenue for August will be affected significantly by this summer’s mass civil protests in Hong Kong, weakening inbound and outbound traffic.
The Hong Kong-based airline said its July traffic figures, released Aug. 21, were not hurt much by the protests, but expects that will not be the case for its next monthly report.

Air Astana shifts Moscow operations for S7 codeshare
Air Astana is shifting its Moscow services from Sheremetyevo to the Russian capital's Domodedovo airport from the beginning of the winter season.
Links to both Nur-Sultan and Almaty – a total of 25 weekly flights – will be moved from 27 October.

Comair 737 departed despite taxi collision uncertainty
South African investigators have determined that a Comair Boeing 737-800 departed Johannesburg despite uncertainty over a possible taxiing collision with a Mango aircraft.
The Mango 737-800, bound for Cape Town, had taken an incorrect taxiing route from the apron which resulted in its unintentionally following the Comair jet along taxiway A.

IAG’s Walsh calls Heathrow expansion ‘massive gravy train’
International Airlines Group (IAG) CEO Willie Walsh said he has “no confidence” in London Heathrow Airport’s expansion plans and described the cost of the project as a “heist.”
A masterplan for Heathrow’s expansion and third runway was published in June and made available for public comment and consultation through Sept. 13.

US, Japan sign pact on new Tokyo Haneda slots
Delegations from the US and Japan signed an agreement Aug. 21 that will add two dozen new daytime services between US destinations and Tokyo Haneda Airport.
The amended US-Japan Open Skies Agreement allocates 12 new slot pairs for US carriers and 12 for Japanese carriers. The deal’s signing comes after the US Department of Transportation (DOT) on Aug. 9 awarded the available slots to four carriers: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines.

A Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) statement on the pivotal sale has been expected for some months, with confirmation finally coming late last week from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
