PARIS 2019: Boeing MAX service return question dominates air show
As the 53rd Paris Air Show opens, there are signs that Boeing is nearing the next key milestones on its path to getting the grounded fleet back into operational service.
Boeing is working through questions posed by FAA, an independent technical advisory board and its own experts about the redesigned maneuvering characteristics augmentation system (MCAS) software it is developing.

PARIS 2019: CFM focuses on LEAP improvements during MAX grounding
CFM International is using the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX to catch up with deliveries of the aircraft’s LEAP-1B engine and develop long-term fixes for to address early in-service issues.
“We have taken advantage of the time to catch the customers up on any engine maintenance or anything else that needed to go on,” CFM EVP Allen Paxson said during a media briefing on the eve of the air show.

PARIS 2019: Airbus CEO calls tariffs a ‘serious threat’
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury warns that the introduction of tariffs in aerospace as a result of the two World Trade Organization (WTO) cases against the European Union and the US would be “just a disaster.”
“When we look at the systemic impact it is lose, lose, lose,” Faury said in an interview ahead of the Paris Air Show.  “We start to look at it as a serious threat, but I think there is still time to avoid it,” he said.

Russia proposes zero percent VAT for locally registered aircraft
The Russian government’s legislative commission has proposed setting a zero percent value-added tax (VAT) for aircraft registered in Russia to boost civil aviation development.
The government, which published the tax code amendments June 10, also plans to set a zero percent VAT on aircraft engines and spare parts for aircraft registered in Russia. If approved, it will be sent to parliament.

Rolls-Royce on track for UltraFan assembly in 2020
Rolls-Royce has completed another key sub-assembly test for its future UltraFan engine family and, halfway through a year of critical demonstrations, said so far there are no show-stoppers to assembling the first complete engine in 2020. The recent successful run of a four-stage intermediate pressure turbine rig test at Rolls-owned Spanish company ITP indicates the pieces of the UltraFan jigsaw puzzle are coming together, Rolls-Royce civil future programs chief engineer Phil Curnock ...

Interim report on Aeroflot SSJ 100 crash details uncontrolled landing attempts
Russia’s CIS-wide Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) has posted a preliminary report on the crash of an Aeroflot Sukhoi SuperJet 100-95 (SSJ 100) at Moscow Sheremetyevo airport May 5.
The hard landing and subsequent fire killed one cabin crew and 40 of the 73 passengers. Both pilots, two other cabin crew and six passengers were injured.

LaudaMotion considers fifth base; eyes up to 35 A320s by summer 2020
Irish LCC Ryanair subsidiary LaudaMotion is exploring a fifth base outside its German-speaking home market and is on track to operate at least 35 Airbus A320s by summer 2020. LaudaMotion CEO Andreas Gruber told ATW in an exclusive interview, “We [have received] massive feedback from airports that like to work with us, asking if LaudaMotion could start services from them. Our fifth base could be in the Baltics or Scandinavia, but we are also looking into Eastern Europe.”

PARIS 2019: Emirates in talks with Boeing on widebody order changes
Emirates Airline is negotiating with Boeing to spread out deliveries of the Boeing 777X over a longer period of time and will likely switch from the larger 787-10 to the smaller 787-9.
The changes to the order are triggered by Airbus’ decision to terminate the A380 program, after which Emirates significantly reduced its outstanding A380 orders.

Ryanair opens second French base
Ireland-based LCC Ryanair has opened its second base in France, at Bordeaux; it already has one at Marseilles.
The carrier intends to station three Boeing 737-800s at the southwest French airport, from which it will serve 37 routes in 14 countries with up to 86 weekly flights.

Spanish LCC Volotea opens Italy base at Cagliari
Spanish LCC Volotea has opened a new base in Italy at Cagliari Elmas Airport, where it has two Airbus A319s.
Cagliari, located on the Italian island Sardinia, is the carrier’s 13th base, the fifth in Italy, from where it operates 15 routes.

Air Austral leases two A330s to cover for grounded 787
Air Austral has leased two Airbus A330-200s to help limit disruption to its peak summer schedule after grounding one of its two Boeing 787s for at least two months because of ongoing issues with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
The aircraft mainly operates on the service between Paris and Mayotte, an overseas department of France, which the La Reunion-based carrier is increasing to seven direct weekly flights from June 15.

PARIS 2019: Air France-KLM eyes Airbus, Boeing aircraft for fleet renewal
Air France-KLM will consider Boeing 737 MAX, Airbus A320neo and A220 aircraft types as it prepares to renew its short- and medium-haul fleet, CEO Ben Smith told ATW on the sidelines of the Paris Air Forum June 14. He said the group is also considering how long the Airbus A380 will remain part of its fleet.

Zurich-based Germania Flug rebrands as Chair Airlines
Switzerland’s Germania Flug AG has rebranded as Chair Airlines, effective July 1.
The airline currently operates out of Zurich with three 150-seat Airbus A319s; it employs 150 staff.

SAS details A350 entry into service plans
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) plans to debut its first Airbus A350 between Copenhagen and Chicago on Jan. 28, 2020, and will roll out the new aircraft type on seven routes throughout the year.
On June 13, SAS detailed its plans for the eight Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered A350s that it has on order.

Iceland’s Keflavik airport reopens for restricted flight tests
Iceland’s airport and air navigation services operator Isavia is re-opening Keflavik International Airport for the limited use of crosswind flight testing of new aircraft.
The agreement is a breakthrough for Airbus and Boeing which, together with other manufacturers, have jointly lobbied the Icelandic government-owned airport operator to allow use of the facility which is famous for its predictable and ferocious crosswinds.

Climate-change protesters delay planned Heathrow action
Climate-change protesters in the UK have paused plans for action intended to disrupt services at London Heathrow airport during June or July, though are not ruling out future measures in protest at the airport's expansion.
At the end of May, it emerged that Extinction Rebellion planned "nonviolent direct action" on 18 June, targeting closure of the airport for a day, and would escalate efforts in July if demands were not met.

PARIS: Embraer KC-390 delivery to Brazil delayed a few months
Embraer plans to deliver its first KC-390 transport to the Brazilian air force in the next few months, after a further slight delay from its original plan to hand over the aircraft at the end of 2018.
The twin-turbofan military transport the company plans to deliver to Brazil was at the show on 16 June, conducting a demo flight for journalists and standing on static display.

PARIS: CH-53K only solution for Germany, says Sikorsky
Sikorsky arrives at Paris with a simple message: if you want a 21st century heavy-lift helicopter, then the only solution is the CH-53K King Stallion.
Although France is not considering the platform, Germany remains a key battleground to securing an export order for the CH-53K.
