Pilot under emotional stress before US-Bangla Q400 crash
Investigators have determined that a pilot operating a US-Bangla Bombardier Q400 was under stress, before the aircraft crashed on 12 March last year at Kathmandu Tribhuvan international airport. In its final report, the Nepal Accident Investigation Commission found that the pilot was "emotionally disturbed" after a personal conversation in the cockpit with a colleague went sour.

Airbus, Thai firm to collaborate on MRO and pilot training
Airbus and Thailand's Civil Aviation Training Center (CATC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in developing and implementing aircraft maintenance training and pilot training courses. The aircraft manufacturer says it has started work with CATC on basic aircraft maintenance training courses, as well as ab initio flight training courses for pilots.

Spanish authorities seek owner of abandoned MD-87
Madrid Barajas airport's director is seeking information on a neglected 29-year old Boeing MD-87 parked at the Spanish hub. In a formal notification to Spain's official state bulletin, Elena Mayoral Corcuera has informed that the aircraft is "in an obvious state of abandonment". It gives the registration as EC-KRV.

Qantas eyes passenger needs for ultra-long-haul
Qantas has detailed requests from passengers as part of its research into its plan to launch ultra-long-haul flights to Europe and the United States in 2022, dubbed 'Project Sunrise'. The research, done in conjunction with the Sydney University's Charles Perkins Center, found that health and wellness were the consistent trend from its research, with a focus on mindfulness and a "separation of experience" during different stages of a long-haul flight.

Jets shoved and buses toppled by Antalya tornado
Video images have emerged showing the effects of a tornado which struck Antalya airport, on the southern Turkish coast, on 26 January. The vortex was captured appearing to head north along the airport apron, traveling between international Terminal 1 and the threshold of runway 18C.

'No screaming good' deals on WestJet's first 787 flights: CFO
Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet is taking a somewhat novel tack in how it prices seats on soon-to-launch Boeing 787-9 flights. Instead of slashing prices to generate demand, the carrier is selling seats at market rates, therefore avoiding having to hike fares later.

Alaska's Horizon swings to profit amid regional jet shift
Alaska Air Group says it has straightened out problems at regional subsidiary Horizon Air, which in recent years suffered labor strife, operational snarls and an acute pilot shortage. Horizon is again posting profits following a management overhaul and a fleet transition that has seen the unit divest Bombardier turboprops while acquiring Embraer regional jets.

Delta postpones A220 entry into service
Delta Air Lines has confirmed it will postpone the entry into service of its Airbus A220 beyond a scheduled date of 31 January, due to an ongoing US government shutdown that has held up certification processes. The airline had planned to operate the A220-100 on flights from New York LaGuardia airport to Boston and Dallas/Fort Worth, but will now deploy other aircraft on the routes, says a Delta spokesperson.

A330-900 secures beyond-180min ETOPS approval
Airbus has secured a further extended twin-engined operations (ETOPS) clearance for the A330neo from the European Aviation Safety Agency. EASA has approved the A330-900 to conducted ETOPS beyond 180min, according to a 24 January revision of capabilities.

American Airlines Cargo's record year in 2018
American Airlines Cargo reported record mail/freight volumes and revenues in 2018, a reflection of airline performance across the North America region. In total, the Dallas-hubbed airline saw cargo traffic increase by 4.3% year on year to 2.9bn cargo ton miles, while revenues were up by 13.8% year on year to just over $1bn. This reflects strong growth for airline's in the region last year - IATA statistics for the region show North American carriers reported a 7.2% increase in cargo traffic over the first 11 months of the year.

American Airlines posts $319 million profit on solid demand
American Airlines said Thursday that it earned a fourth-quarter profit of $319 million, slightly higher than analysts expected, as strong travel demand helped the carrier overcome higher fuel prices. American's shares rose 6 percent in morning trading. Airline executives said the partial government shutdown has hurt bookings, but that sales to other customers including key corporate travelers has remained strong.

American Airlines opens O'Hare's largest aircraft hangar
American Airlines will formally lift the curtain Friday on a new aircraft maintenance hangar at O’Hare International Airport, where the world’s largest airline has its third-largest hub. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will bring American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) Vice President Franco Tedeschi, in charge of the carrier’s O’Hare operations, and Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie Rhee to the new maintenance outpost.

HAV poised to launch Airlander 10 production
Do not write off the world's largest aircraft yet. A little over a year after a second flight-test accident left its lighter-than-air hybrid airship deflated, Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) is ready to begin production of its Airlander 10, and is talking to five "early adopters" – two from the commercial world and three in defence and security – about becoming launch operator.

KAI to explore feasibility of regional airliner
orea Aerospace Industries (KAI) will explore the possibility of developing a regional airliner. The company says it will conduct a feasibility study over the next two to three years. This could be followed by a two-year definition study, and potentially a seven year development cycle.

Boeing secures $2.5bn order for 19 P-8 maritime patrol aircraft
Boeing received a $2.5 billion foreign military sales order for 19 P-8 maritime patrol aircraft for the US Navy, Royal Air Force and Norway. The USN is ordering 10 aircraft, the UK is ordering four aircraft and the government of Norway is ordering five aircraft.

Bell V-280 hits 280kt speed goal
Bell has hit its target speed of 280kt (518km/h) with the V-280 tiltrotor in a little over a year since the technology demonstrator performed its first flight. The airframer says it will continue to expand the aircraft's flight envelope, as it eyes the US Army's Future Vertical Lift (FVL) program.

KC-46A debuts as Boeing reveals rapid delivery plan
Deliveries of the Boeing KC-46A to the US Air Force will rise sharply in the early part of 2019 following the delivery of the first two examples on 25 January, but will eventually level off at three aircraft monthly for the remainder of this year. Multiple aircraft per month will be delivered over the course of the first few months of 2019, says Mike Gibbons, Boeing KC-46A tanker vice-president and program manager. Boeing has 12 aircraft that are fully complete and awaiting acceptance by the USAF, he adds. The company is on contract for 52 of an expected 179 tankers for the service.
