Commonality push for 787-10 alters HLFC and wings for -9
Boeing's effort to ensure as much industrial and design commonality between the two largest variants of its Dreamliner family has evolved into a two-way transfer of technology, with major elements of the 787-9, including the wing and hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC) system, now matching those of its bigger brother, the -10.

Avolon acquires CIT’s leasing business, becomes third-largest lessor
Irish lessor Avolon completed the acquisition of New York-based CIT Group’s leasing business April 4 at a sale price of $10.4 billion. The transaction makes Avolon the world’s third largest lessor with a fleet of 868 aircraft worth over $43 billion, as of Dec. 31, 2016.

United Aircraft Corp. posts $74 million net loss in 2016
Russia’s United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) reported a 2016 net loss of RUB4.5 billion ($74 million), narrowed from a net loss of RUB109 billion in 2015. Full-year revenue rose 20.5% year-over-year to RUB416.9 billion, as a result of a 60% growth in after-sale support service and aircraft modernization to RUB93 billion, UAC said.

Air Canada chief operating officer resigns
Air Canada's chief operating officer, Klaus Goersch, is to step down from the carrier at the end of this month. The airline has yet to identify a successor.

Air New Zealand picks Acro seat for A320neo fleet
Air New Zealand has become launch customer for UK manufacturer Acro's latest economy seat. The airline has picked the Series 6 seat – which Acro developed over the past two years to replace its current Series 3 product – for its on-order Airbus A320neo fleet.

Alitalia cancels flights ahead of April 5 labor strike
Italian national carrier Alitalia has preemptively canceled 60% of its scheduled flights for April 5 in preparation for a 24-hour strike action called by trade unions. The strike action comes following a March 31 meeting that included Alitalia’s incoming president Luigi Gubitosi, Alitalia’s outgoing president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo and several Italian government ministers.

American no-frills fares show early success
American Airlines' new basic economy fare class is achieving sought after increases to economy fares, an early analysis by Wolfe Research finds. Over the five weeks since the no-frills fares were rolled out on 21 February, economy fares increased 117% and basic economy fares just 16% in the 10 markets where the Fort Worth-based carrier is offering basic economy, wrote Wolfe Research analyst Hunter Keay on 31 March.

Cebu Pacific 2016 net profit doubles to $196 million
Philippine-based low-cost carrier (LCC) Cebu Pacific Air posted a PHP9.8billion ($196.4 million) net profit in 2016, more than doubling the company’s PHP4.4 billion net income reported in 2015. Cebu attributed the growth to increased passenger demand and growth in ancillary revenues.

Delta shares down after carrier cuts revenue metric a second time
Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc fell on Tuesday after the carrier lowered its forecast for a closely watched revenue metric for the second time in less than a month. Delta said it expects passenger unit revenue - which compares sales with flight capacity - to fall about 0.5 percent in the first quarter ended on March 31.

Hawaiian Airlines unveils new interior aboard A321neo
Hawaiian Airlines is touting the interiors of is new Airbus A321neo passenger jets as evoking "the spirit of Hawaii." Hawaiian noted on its website that the interior design is "inspired by Hawaii's craft and cultural traditions," and "expresses our heritage through bold, contemporary design."

Iran Aseman Airlines agrees to buy up to 60 Boeing 737 MAXs
Boeing has confirmed Iran Aseman Airlines signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for 30 737 MAX aircraft, with a list price value of $3 billion. The deal includes purchase rights for 30 additional 737 MAXs. Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2022.

Drunk Sunwings Pilot Gets Prison Sentence
A pilot at Canadian leisure carrier Sunwing Airlines was given an eight-month prison sentence on Monday after appearing to pass out while drunk prior to a flight to Mexico. The pilot, 37-year old Slovakian national Miroslav Gronych, pleaded guilty to having three times the permitted level of alcohol in his system while being in charge of an aircraft.

United using mobile devices to speed up aircraft maintenance
United Airlines is working with Apple and IBM to streamline aircraft maintenance using Apple mobile devices. The pilot program was launched in March.

TSA opens 19-lane checkpoint at Newark, N.J., airport
The Transportation Security Administration has opened a new 19-lane checkpoint in United Airlines' Terminal C at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport. The checkpoint includes 17 lanes that have automatic bin-return technology.

The Pentagon approved the US Navy’s Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion to enter its production and deployment phase this week, according to a Defense Department spokesman.

Boeing receives $2.2bn order for 17 P-8As
Boeing has secured a $2.2 billion contract covering 17 P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft destined for the US Navy, plus export customers Australia and the UK. Announcing the deal on 3 April, Boeing said the agreement also includes options for 32 additional aircraft, and "money for long-lead parts for future orders". The entire contract could be worth $6.8 billion if all options are exercised, it adds.

Argentina emerges as potential L-159 customer
Aero Vodochody is in early negotiations to provide its L-159 light-attack aircraft to Argentina, after the company officially re-established its manufacturing of the type following a 13-year production hiatus.
