Safran reacts to Zodiac Aerospace’s 1H decline
French aircraft equipment company Zodiac Aerospace has posted a 1.8% first-half sales decline, triggering a response from aerospace giant Safran, which is planning to acquire Zodiac. Zodiac’s first-half sales fell to €2.4 billion ($2.6 billion). A 2.6% drop in organic sales was offset by a 0.8% gain from exchange rate fluctuations, culminating in the 1.8% decline.

Air Canada gets green light for flights to Belize
Canadian regulators have approved a request by Air Canada to operate flights between Canada and Belize, according to Canadian Transportation Agency documents. The documents do not specify routes or a start date, and Air Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Alaska announces six more routes from San Diego
Alaska Airlines will launch six new routes from San Diego International airport starting in August. On 27 August Alaska will begin daily flights from San Diego to both Omaha and Austin, the carrier says.

Cathay dives to 2016 operating loss on competition woes
The Cathay Pacific Group posted an operating loss of HK$525 million ($70.2 million) for the year ended 31 December 2016, as a strong local currency, slowing Chinese economic growth, and intense competition put pressure on yields. The poor operating result marks a significant contrast to the operating profit of HK$6.7 billion posed in 2015.

New Cyprus Airways receives AOC
Startup carrier Cyprus Airways has secured its air operator’s certificate (AOC) and plans to launch operations “very soon.” The new Cyprus Airways received its first aircraft, an Airbus A319, on Dec. 1, 2016. At the time, the airline said it planned to secure the AOC before the end of 2016.

Looting hampered Dana MD-83 crash response
Investigators have disclosed that some occupants of the Dana Air Boeing MD-83 crash in Lagos might have survived the initial impact, but succumbed to the subsequent fire. The Nigerian Accident Investigation Bureau has also revealed that the rescue and recovery effort was hampered by, among other factors, “massive looting” that took place at the crash site.

Jazz short landing reveals lack of awareness over instability
Ambiguous guidance to crews meant the pilots of a Jazz turboprop did not realise their approach was unstable before it landed short at Sault Ste Marie, striking light fixtures and damaging the aircraft. Canadian Transportation Safety Board investigators found that the Bombardier de Havilland Dash 8-100’s crew opted for a VOR/DME approach to runway 30, owing to deteriorating visibility, and had identified an approach speed of 101kt.

JetBlue launches fleet review with E190 cost concerns
JetBlue Airways has launched a major review of its fleet, as the carrier’s chief executive expresses dissatisfaction over its fleet of Embraer 190s. The New York-based airline’s new chief financial officer Steve Priest has been tasked to review the airline’s current fleet and future orders, says chief executive Robin Hayes at the JP Morgan aviation, transportation and industrials conference today.

Lufthansa, VC pilot union reach agreement
Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo and Germanwings have reached a deal with the Vereinigung Cockpit pilot union (VC) on all collective bargaining agreements concerning wages, productivity, transitional payments and pensions, in a contract that runs through June 2022.

Ryanair to begin Ukrainian flights
Ryanair has disclosed plans to start serving Ukraine in October. The budget carrier says it will operate four routes to Kiev Borispol. Ukraine's capital will be served thrice weekly from Eindhoven, five times per week from London Stansted, thrice weekly from Manchester and four times per week from Stockholm Skavsta.

United raises 2017 capacity; CEO tries to allay investor ‘angst’
United Airlines has significantly raised its capacity growth guidance for 2017, breaking from rivals American Airlines and Delta Air Lines on plans to keep growth low this year. United now believes full-year 2017 consolidated capacity will rise 2.5% to 3.5% year-over-year, up from previous guidance of 1% to 2% growth. Domestic ASMs are now expected to increase 3.5% to 4.5%, up from previous guidance of 1.5% to 2.5% growth. American plans to grow system capacity just 1% in 2017 with no domestic growth, while Delta has promised a hard 1% cap on ASM growth this year.
