Mitsubishi Aircraft changes leadership following latest MRJ delay
Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. parent company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has installed two of its executives at the top of the leadership structure of its subsidiary producing the MRJ, the Japanese regional jet that has been beset by multiple program delays. Mitsubishi Aircraft president Hiromichi Morimoto will retire March 31, Mitsubishi Aircraft said in a message to journalists detailing personnel changes. Morimoto, who had been Mitsubishi Aircraft’s top executive since April 2015, will be replaced by Hisakazu Mizutani, who is currently the president and CEO of MHI’s Integrated Defense & Space Systems business. Mizutani will become Mitsubishi Aircraft president April 1.

Air Canada expanding international connections
Air Canada is adding Reykjavik, Iceland, to its list of international destinations, with service from Toronto and Montreal scheduled to launch in June. London, Mumbai, India; Shanghai and Berlin are among the international destinations Air Canada is adding in 2017.

American makes progress in last phases of US Airways integration
American Airlines is "hard at work" on moving all flight attendants to a single system, a project that should be completed in about a year, says Beverly Goulet, chief integration officer. American's successful integration with US Airways earned it Air Transport World's Airline of the Year award in 2016.

CityJet firms order for six CRJ900s
Irish regional carrier CityJet has firmed an order to purchase six Bombardier CRJ900s, with options for another four aircraft, Bombardier announces. The six aircraft are worth $280 million at list prices, and CityJet will operate them under contract with SAS, says Bombardier.

Etihad Airways expands 787 network
Etihad Airways plans to substantially expand Boeing 787 routes over the coming year. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier currently has 10 787-9s on strength, with a further nine scheduled to arrive this year. Etihad will eventually have a fleet of 71 787s, comprising 41 787-9s and 30 of the larger 787-10 models, as the wide-bodied twinjet becomes the airline’s flagship long-haul aircraft.

Icelandair to hit top end of 2016 guidance
Icelandair is expecting to report a full-year EBITDA at the top end of its $210-$220 million revised guidance, but has warned that EBITDA will drop to $140-$150 million in 2017 because of volatile market conditions. Updating the market Feb. 2, Icelandair described 2016 as a good year that will “be close to the upper limit” of its guidance, but added there is increased uncertainty in the short term.

SkyWest Swings To Full Year Loss
SkyWest announced its fourth quarter and full year results on Thursday showing a loss for both periods. The parent of SkyWest Airlines and ExpressJet reported a USD$270.2 million net loss for the fourth quarter to end December 2016, from a $40.4 million profit in the previous year period. The loss was due to a one-off $465.6 million aircraft asset impairment charge during the quarter.

UTair’s domestic traffic grew 25.5% in 2016
UTair Aviation carried 5.6 million domestic passengers in 2016, up 25.5% year-over-year (YOY), according to the Russian carrier. Overall, the airline carried a total of 6.6 million passengers, up 20.1% YOY. UTair cited network development and frequencies increase, as well as a 2-point load factor rise to 71.9%, for the results.

Virgin Australia Q2 Profit Drops 37 Percent
Virgin Australia Group’s second quarter underlying profit before tax dropped 37 percent to AUD$45.9 million (USD$35.1 million). Statutory profit before tax came in at AUD$13.1 million, the Brisbane-based airline said in a stock exchange statement.

Wizz Air considers UK AOC
Central and Eastern European low-cost carrier (LCC) Wizz Air is considering whether it should set up a UK air operator’s certificate (AOC) in the wake of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union (EU) (Brexit). “We are looking at a number of scenarios internally, including setting up a UK AOC if we have to,” Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi said, speaking on Wizz Air’s Feb. 1 earnings call.

FedEx Express will be the first private commercial flight service to locate inside the Kennedy Space Center. "The space industry, comprised of highly specialized and time-sensitive shipments, is poised for rapid growth and innovation," said FedEx's Brie Carere.

UK government details Heathrow third runway conditions
The UK government has told London Heathrow Airport to improve domestic connectivity and offset the social impact of its planned third runway as part of a bid to secure planning permission. The measures were outlined in a draft airports national policy statement (NPS), published Feb. 2, and opened to a 16-week UK-wide public consultation. The government also launched an airspace and noise consultation, which aims to optimize the country’s aircraft movements.

DARPA details OFFSET swarming UAVs
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has released details on a crucial leg of its third offset initiative, a swarming unmanned vehicle program known as OFFensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET). DARPA has pinned its hopes on the future of autonomous and adaptive vehicles on the gaming industry, which it expects can leverage software from game development platforms such as Unity 3D and Unreal to create realistic scenarios.

Russia reveals export ambitions for MiG-35
Russia has rolled out its first RAC MiG-35 fighter and announced its intention to offer the multirole type to a host of potential export customers, including India. Staged at the airframer’s Lukhovitsy site near Moscow on 27 January, the milestone event was attended by officials including Russian air force chief Col Gen Victor Bondarev and delegations from more than 30 countries. United Aircraft identifies these as having including representatives from nations including China, India, Peru and Vietnam.
