Rolls-Royce: Cost-cutting program making ‘significant progress’
UK-based engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce said it is making “significant progress” in its transformation program to improve the company’s financial outlook, against a background of mixed markets. “We have made significant progress over the last 12 months implementing the findings of our operating review, including key changes to the management and structure of our company,” CEO Warren East said.

Boeing proposes new Gatwick commercial maintenance hangar
Boeing plans to build a commercial aviation maintenance hangar at London Gatwick Airport, Boeing UK said Nov. 17. Subject to approval, Boeing plans to begin construction on the project in late 2017. The hangar, which will primarily support Boeing’s European GoldCare fleet engineering, materials and maintenance customers, is expected to open for operations in 2018. London Gatwick Airport will complete an environmental study before the proposal is delivered to the local planning authority for review and hoped-for approval.

Air Europa, NAC complete Embraer E195 sale and leaseback deal
Spanish carrier Air Europa and Danish regional aircraft lessor Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) have completed a sale and leaseback on seven Embraer E195s. “The aircraft will be operated by Air Europa’s sister company, Aeronova,” NAC said.

Alaska Airlines ready to connect San Diego to US capital
Alaska Airlines is in the process of adding service from San Diego, Calif., to Washington, D.C., bringing the carrier a fourth East Coast destination from the city. The airline currently connects San Diego to Boston, Orlando, Fla., and Newark, NJ.

Etihad Cargo steps up European links
Etihad Cargo, the freight division of Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, has launched three new dedicated freighter services from Europe. It is now operating Boeing 777Fs from the UK’s East Midlands and London Stansted airports, as well as from Copenhagen, Denmark.

Interjet to establish SSJ100 competence center
Mexico’s low-cost carrier Interjet and the Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Co. (SCAC) will establish a competence center for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) to improve service support, manufacture components and implement improvements to the aircraft. The agreement to form the new center was signed by Interjet CEO Jose Luis Garza Alvarez and SCAC president Kamil Gaynutdinov.

Republic plans Chapter 11 emergence in 1Q 2017
Indianapolis-based regional airline operator Republic Airways Holdings plans to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the 2017 first quarter, the company said in a plan of reorganization filed with a federal bankruptcy court in New York. The parent company of regional airlines Republic Airlines and Shuttle America filed for bankruptcy protection in February, saying it was the only way it could renegotiate contracts with major US airlines for which it operates regional flights. The renegotiations were necessary in part because of a “nationwide pilot shortage,” chairman, president and CEO Bryan Bedford said.

United Airlines CEO: Buffett gives airline industry "seal of approval"
United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz says the recent investment by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is a "Good Housekeeping seal of approval" for the industry and United. "It also provides what I call an anchor tenant in this industry and our stock," he said.

Three Heathrow flights in three days brush with drones
UK investigators have disclosed details of three more encounters, within three days, between commercial aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles in London terminal airspace, including two in the highest collision risk category. The UK Airprox Board states that an Airbus A320-family aircraft had been descending on its base leg over central London ahead of an approach to Heathrow’s runway 27L when its pilots sighted a “black drone” through the right-hand cockpit windows.

Poland selects Gulfstream G550 for VIP transport
Gulfstream has secured an order from the Polish government for two G550 business jets to be used for VIP transport missions. The large-cabin, long-range aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2017 and will be operated by the country’s air force. Warsaw’s search for a modern VIP capability stems from the April 2010 crash of a Tupolev Tu-154 transport which killed 96 people, including the nation’s then-president, Lech Kaczyński.

Spain receives its first A400M transport
Spain has taken delivery of its first Airbus Defence & Space A400M tactical transport, which will now be transitioned to its home operating base at Zaragoza in the northeast of the country. Aircraft MSN44 carried out its maiden flight from Airbus’s Seville final assembly site in September, and is the first of 27 examples on order for Spain.
