Aerospace investment could help South Africa fly
The dilemma is not unique, but for a country that teeters maddeningly between advanced economy and developing world, South Africa’s is particularly poignant. Under apartheid, an isolated and threatened white regime poured resources into training engineers and developing its own military technologies. The first democratic government inherited in the 1990s a strong, innovative aerospace and defence sector. That industry is still influential globally, but over two decades administrations have had other spending priorities, not least education, health and social care to redress the imbalances of white minority rule.

Rolls-Royce To Cut 200 Managers
Rolls-Royce will cut 200 management positions through voluntary redundancy as it continues its restructuring. The UK-based aero engine maker announced a restructuring in November 2015 under a "simplicity and pace" tagline, aiming to save between GBP£150 million and GBP£200 million (USD$196 million - USD$261.5 million) annually by 2017.

Pratt & Whitney struggling with GTF fan blade learning curve
Pratt & Whitney is taking twice as long to build geared turbofan (GTF) engine fan blades as would be ideal, which is the primary cause of GTF delivery delays, the CEO of Pratt’s parent company said. United Technologies Corp. (UTC) president and CEO Greg Hayes said UTC subsidiary Pratt will deliver about 150 GTF engines this year instead of 200 as planned, and acknowledged that Pratt will be making payments to airlines as a result of engine delivery delays.

IAG Engine Center Europe acquires Alitalia Maintenance Systems
IAG Engine Center Europe has completed the acquisition of the engine and component repair business of Alitalia Maintenance Systems (AMS). IAG is a division of International Aerospace Group (IAG), a US-based company in the sale, repair and leasing of aircraft engines as well as aircraft replacement parts sales. IAG said it plans to operate a “world class engine maintenance and repair facility in Rome adding engine repair and overhaul capability for CFM56-5B and 7B, as well as APU overhaul and repair capability to its existing overhaul and repair capabilities for CF6-80, CF6-50 and JT9 engines.”

Alaska tests self-service baggage technology at LAX
Alaska Airlines is testing a Scan and Fly self-service baggage drop program at Los Angeles International Airport. For two months, the airline will test six self-service lanes for checked baggage.

American Airlines uniforms get fresh new look
American Airlines employees will don new uniforms on Tuesday, one of the final steps in the American-US Airways merger that closed in 2013. "It's a huge milestone for us," said Brady Byrnes, director of global marketing for the carrier.

EgyptAir Crash Debris Contains TNT Traces
French investigators have found traces of TNT explosive on the wreckage of EgyptAir flight MS804, according to a media report. Le Figaro said that French investigators were prevented from further examination of crash debris after detecting the traces.

Firstnation Airways resumes operations after MRO grounding
Lagos-based Firstnation Airways resumed flights Sept. 18 after its Airbus A319 fleet was grounded for more than three weeks for maintenance work. Firstnation Airways, which launched flights in 2013, operates two CFM56-powered Airbus A319s, according to the AWIN fleet database.

Jet2 receives first of 30 Boeing 737-800s
UK leisure airline Jet2 has taken delivery of the first of 30 Boeing 737-800s it has on order. The 189-seat aircraft, which will enter revenue service over the next few weeks, will be followed by the remainder of the 30-strong order over the next two years. The aircraft were ordered in two batches, comprising an order for 27 737-800s that was finalized in September 2015 and a further three that were ordered in December 2015.

JetBlue helps 50 crew members get BAs through scholars program
The JetBlue Scholars Program is graduating its inaugural class, with 50 crew members from the airline receiving their bachelor's degree through the program. Through the program, JetBlue pays most of the costs of a college education, with an average age of 42 among participants in the program.

JetBlue offers complimentary flights to NYC street musicians
JetBlue is giving three New York City buskers free air travel for one year as part VH1's Save the Music program.. Superfly Productions selected the winning buskers. In addition, JetBlue and VH1 Save the Music Foundation have joined together to launch a charity buzz auction that will run until Sept. 23.

Lufthansa, Pilot Union Talks End Without Agreement
Informal talks between Lufthansa and its pilot union have ended without agreement, the Vereinigung Cockpit union said. Negotiations have been going on between the airline and VC for four years. Lufthansa said in August, when official talks broke down, that although some progress had been made, no agreement had been reached.

Spirit Airlines is third airline to receive US-built A321
Spirit Airlines has taken delivery of its first US-produced Airbus A321, making the Florida-based ultra low-cost carrier the third airline to receive an aircraft built at Airbus’ Mobile, Alabama manufacturing facility. It is the Toulouse-based manufacturer’s tenth aircraft delivered from the final assembly line (FAL) plant in Mobile.

FlightGlobal onboard United A319 runway excursion
A United Airlines Airbus A319 aircraft suffered a runway excursion at Denver International Airport while attempting to takeoff on flight 296 to Reno. The thrust reversers revved up, there was a small bump, and the aircraft stopped. FlightGlobal happened to be aboard the aircraft to witness the incident first hand. Passengers appeared confused, but not deeply concerned. “Unfortunately, we did depart the paved surface area,” said the pilot over the public announcement system.

Dublin Airport to revamp Departures Floor in Terminal 1
Parts of the floor have been upgraded several times over the past four decades but in some areas the original tiling laid when the building opened in 1972 is still in place. Other improvements to the Departures Floor, include new wooden and tile fascia around the walls and the removal of ticket desks to create more light and space.

Certifiable Predator B nears flight test phase
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems is carrying out ground tests of its newly built Certifiable Predator B unmanned air vehicle, ahead of a flight campaign at the US Army’s Yuma Proving Ground throughout 2017 and 2018. Aircraft integration finished on 29 August, with the first completed system then moved to the company’s Gray Butte flight operations facility in California.
