Airbus Narrows Gap With Boeing After 83 Orders In May
Airbus sold 83 aircraft in May, narrowing Boeing's lead in the race for orders after a slow start to the year. New business included 60 new-generation narrow-body jets to at least one customer whose name was not disclosed, bringing the total number of aircraft ordered so far this year to 200.

Irkut Corp. to roll out the MC-21-300 on June 8
Russian aircraft manufacturer Irkut Corp. will roll out the MC-21-300 aircraft on June 8 at its factory in Irkutsk. The new aircraft was named as a successor to the Tu-154 and is intended to compete with the A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX. The MC-21 is available in two versions—the -200 and -300—which seat 132 and 163, respectively, in a standard two-class layout, or a maximum 165 and 211 seats.

Nordic Aviation Capital buys 25 E-Jets from Air Lease Corp.
Danish regional aircraft lessor Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) has agreed to buy 25 Embraer E175 and E190 aircraft from US-based Air Lease Corp. (ALC). This is the second major fleet transaction between the two companies. In January, ALC sold its fleet of 25 ATRs to NAC.

American Airlines just made a big change most passengers will hate
This means that instead of rewarding passengers for each mile flown, the airline will base miles on the amount of money spent on a ticket. AAdvantage members will earn five miles for every dollar spent. But members with status will earn more, all the way up to 11 miles per dollar for Executive Platinum members. It's a move that will surely annoy many of the airline's economy passengers but that will reward American's coveted premium-cabin customers.

Emirates Signs USD$300 Million IT Deal With IBM
Emirates has signed a USD$300 million, ten-year information technology services agreement with IBM. IBM will provide IT services, allowing the airline to improve efficiency on its passenger support systems and functions, a statement from IBM said.

Ethiopian Airlines to establish Bangkok as hub
Ethiopian Airlines is looking to develop a Southeast Asian hub at Bangkok, according to reports by the Ethiopian State News Agency. The airline is planning to use its existing facilities and fifth freedom permissions to establish routes out of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport to destinations including Singapore and Indonesia.

JetBlue, Portuguese carrier ink codeshare agreement
JetBlue Airways and TAP Portugal have inked a codeshare agreement. The agreement allows JetBlue to put its code on TAP flights from Lisbon, Portugal, to New York and Boston. In return, TAP can place its code on JetBlue flights in the US.

MH17: Missile exhaust displayed as prosecutor builds case
Dutch prosecutors have displayed a large missile component, the exhaust of a Buk surface-to-air weapon, as they work to build a criminal case over the destruction of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. The Dutch public prosecutor’s office says the venturi port – which accelerates combusting fuel gas to propel the missile – was found at the crash site of the Boeing 777-200ER after it came down in eastern Ukraine.

Malaysia Airlines set to use A380s for charter business
Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) is looking to use its existing Airbus A380 fleet for charter services to help boost revenue. Speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on charter services with major Malaysian tour operators, MAB CCO Paul Simmons said there is “strong demand” for more charter capacity on the China-Malaysia route to Sabah. He added there is also good potential for religious travel charters to Middle East destinations.

Spirit Airlines and IAM Reach Tentative Agreement
Spirit Airlines has reached a tentative agreement with the International Association of Machinists (IAM), covering ramp service team members based at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). An interim agreement was reached in June of 2015 that covered wages, job security, and benefits. Spirit Airlines and the IAM were committed to negotiating a mutually agreeable contract that addresses the needs and concerns of Spirit’s ramp service team members and the airline. The ratification vote will take place during the week of June 20, 2016.

WN is now offering nonstop flights between RNO and OAK
Southwest Airlines is now offering nonstop flights between Reno and Oakland. Officials celebrated the launch of the three new daily flights at Reno-Tahoe International Airport on Monday.

UPS freighter suffers nose wheel collapse at ICN
A Boeing MD-11 freighter operated by United Parcel Surface (UPS) experienced the collapse of its nose wheel during a failed takeoff from Seoul Incheon airport. The aircraft (N277UP) was operating flight UPS61 on the Seoul Incheon-Anchorage route, and the incident occurred at 10:30pm local time on Monday 6 June, says UPS.

Greece To Sign Old Airport Sale Deal
Greece said it would sign papers setting up the sale and long-term lease of the old Athens airport of Hellinikon, a sale demanded by international lenders before they unlock loans needed to pay off debt to the International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank.

Southwest Airlines reaches milestone at St. Louis airport
Southwest Airlines reached a milestone recently at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The carrier now offers some 100 daily departures from the airport. Dave Harvey, managing director of business development at Southwest, said it's the first time in a decade that a carrier has offered that many flights from Lambert.

Denmark receives first three MH-60R Seahawks
Denmark has received the first three of an eventual nine Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk anti-submarine warfare helicopters to replace its fleet of ageing Westland Lynx 90s. To be operated by the Royal Danish Air Force, the remainder of the order will be delivered by mid-2018.
