Can aerospace sustain record performance?
The world’s aircraft manufacturers were not without reasons to celebrate as 2015 came to a close. Their key customers in passenger-carrying airlines had shrugged off slower than expected economic output and – buoyed by shrewder management and plunging oil prices – expected to report record-breaking profits globally, in excess of $30 billion. But other less encouraging trends should have ­restrained any cork-popping as the clock ticked past midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Air Lease sells its ATRs to Nordic Aviation Capital
Air Lease Corporation (ALC) is to sell its fleet of 25 ATRs to Denmark’s Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC), which specializes in turboprop and regional aircraft leases. The majority of the 25 aircraft will be transferred from Air Lease to NAC during the first half of 2016.

AA receives high marks from business travelers
A recent survey found that business travelers prefer American Airlines over Delta by a 4 to 1 margin when traveling domestically. The survey asked 1,500 readers of a business travel blog and users of Expertflyer.com for their preferences.

Final administrative step completes AA/US Airways integration
US Airways has been fully absorbed into American Airlines Group as a final administrative step in the 2013 merger between the two carriers. The US Airways brand officially became part of American Airlines Group on Dec. 30, 2015.

ANA: A380 deal not decided
Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) has denied reports that parent company ANA Holdings has completed a deal to acquire three Airbus A380s that were repossessed from low-cost carrier Skymark Airlines. Tokyo-based Skymark filed for bankruptcy early in 2015 and defaulted on payments for an order for six A380s. In August, Skymark’s creditors approved a rehabilitation plan that saw ANA take a 16.5% stake in the company.

China Express buys 10 more Bombardier CRJ900s
China Express Airlines has placed a firm order with Bombardier Commercial Aircraft for 10 CRJ900 regional jets, raising its total orders for 900s to 38. The order exercises options that Chongqing-based China Express had as part of its initial order. To date, 20 CRJ900s aircraft have been delivered.

Etihad Appeals Air Berlin Code-share Ruling
Etihad Airways has filed an appeal against a German court's decision to revoke its rights to jointly sell tickets for 29 routes operated by Air Berlin. "We will fight all the way to protect our investment, to protect our partnership with Air Berlin and to protect competitive choice in German air travel," Etihad chief executive James Hogan said in a statement.

Fiji Airways introduces A330 international services
Fiji Airways will introduce its first Airbus A330-300 on Auckland, New Zealand service Jan. 6. The aircraft was delivered to Fiji at the end of December 2015. It will also be used on other international services such as to Sydney, Australia, and Los Angeles, California, from Jan 16.

Iberia launches new Airbus A330 variant
Iberia has become the first airline to take delivery of the Airbus A330-200 with an increased maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 242 tonnes. The 11,500km-range aircraft is particularly suitable for Iberia’s longest routes, such as those to Buenos Aires and Montevideo.

Ryanair balks at proposed Norwegian tax
Ryanair is seeking to have the Norwegian government roll back plans for an environmental tax for flights originating in Norway, saying such a move would harm jobs and growth in the Nordic nation. The proposed tax of NOK80 ($8.95) per passenger is due to become effective April 1.

Singapore Air Raises Offer Price For Tiger
Singapore Airlines has raised the price of its cash offer to buy all shares in Tiger Airways that it does not already own. SIA said its final offer price was SGD$0.45 a share, up from SGD$0.41 a share in cash for the budget carrier, valuing Tiger at approximately SGD$1.125 billion (USD$790 million).

South Korea To Review Budget Airline Safety
South Korea will review safety at its six budget airlines after two recent incidents, including one involving an aircraft that had to return to its departure airport after a door was not properly sealed. Early on Sunday, a Jin Air Boeing 737-800 on its way to Busan, South Korea, from Cebu in the Philippines returned to Cebu about 25 minutes after takeoff because one of its doors was not completely sealed, an airline spokesman said.

Spatial disorientation overwhelmed Kazan 737 crash crew
Spatial disorientation could have led the pilots of an ill-fated Tatarstan Airlines Boeing 737-500 to perceive that the aircraft was flying inverted as it dived towards the ground. The crew had been attempting a go-around, in darkness, at Kazan on 17 November 2013.

United debuts new routes to Caribbean
United Airlines launched several new routes to the Caribbean, including service from Newark, N.J., to St. Kitts. "The new flight from St. Kitts will provide convenient connections to various destinations across the United States, including Washington, D.C, Boston and Chicago," said Darrell Scott, a spokesman for United.

BAE and Northrop developing self-protection suite for US gunship
Two industry heavyweights of electronic warfare have been chosen to equip special-mission Lockheed Martin AC-130J and MC-130Js with next-generation radio frequency countermeasures (RFCM) systems that can “detect, disrupt and defeat” anti-aircraft weapons, radars and other threats that use electromagnetic signals. BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman received contracts from the Pentagon in November to develop RFCM systems for the MC-130J Commando II multimission tanker-transport, and America’s newest gunship, the 105mm cannon-equipped AC-130J Ghostrider.

Egyptian navy buys 46 Ka-52K attack helicopters
Egypt is to acquire 46 navalised Kamov Ka-52K attack helicopters to equip its new French-built Mistral-class amphibious assault ships. According to Kamov parent Russian Helicopters, the deal with Cairo has been signed via Russia’s Rosoboronexport arms export agency.

Prague signs up for Gripen weapons upgrade
The Czech Republic’s fleet of leased Saab Gripens will undergo a weapons system upgrade as the NATO nation looks to expand the type’s capabilities to support operations until late in the next decade. “The upgrade will increase the aircraft’s ground-attack capabilities through the integration of guided and unguided bombs,” says Sweden’s FXM defence and security export agency. New weapon pylons, related software updates and training services are also included in the SKr120 million ($14.2 million) deal, it adds.
