Bombardier CS100 certified by Transport Canada
The Bombardier CS100, the first variant of the CSeries, has gained type certification from Transport Canada. Canadian transport minister Marc Garneau, speaking from Bombardier’s Mirabel, Quebec, facility, called the certification of the CSeries a “historic moment for Canadian aerospace,” noting the CS100 is the “largest commercial aircraft ever certified by Transport Canada.”

Amazon In Talks To Lease Cargo Aircraft - Report
Amazon is negotiating to lease 20 Boeing 767s to start its own air-delivery service, seeking to avoid delays from third-party carriers, according to a media report. Amazon has approached several lessors to line up the aircraft, the Seattle Times reported, citing a senior aircraft-leasing company executive familiar with matter.

Liberalized US-Mexico air services agreement signed
The US government said it has signed a liberalized air services agreement with Mexico that will go into effect “following internal ratification procedures in Mexico.” US transportation secretary Anthony Foxx and US secretary of state John Kerry said in a joint statement Dec. 18 that the “landmark agreement with one of our largest aviation partners will significantly increase future trade and travel between the United States and Mexico,” adding, “The new agreement will benefit US and Mexican airlines, travelers, businesses, airports and localities by allowing increased market access for passenger and cargo airlines to fly between any city in Mexico and any city in the United States. Cargo carriers will now have expanded opportunities to provide service to new destinations that were not available under the current, more restrictive agreement.”

Hawaiian to debut lie-flat seats with privacy screen
Hawaiian Airlines is targeting leisure travelers with a unique lie-flat seat set to debut in 2018. "In our seats, there is a translucent privacy screen that raises and lowers," said Avi Mannis, senior vice president of marketing for Hawaiian. "If you lower it, you can feel like you're sitting next to someone at dinner that you'd like to be sitting with."

JetBlue updates apps for travelers
JetBlue Airways is finding success in marketing to Hispanic travelers through its Spanish mobile site. The carrier also recently updated several applications and launched a new app for the iPad. "Our enhanced suite of mobile apps brings customers useful features they need, which also frees up our crew members to focus on adding the personal touch that makes the JetBlue experience so special," said Maryssa Miller, director of digital commerce for JetBlue.

Royal Jordanian heads for full-year profit
Royal Jordanian anticipates achieving a profit in its full-year results, compared to a loss of close to JD40 million ($55 million) in 2014, according to its new president and CEO. The Jordanian flag-carrier turned in healthy figures for the first nine months of the year and the comments of Suleiman Obeidat indicate that the improvement is likely to be maintained in the traditionally quieter 4Q period.

Southwest Sued For 2013 New York Landing
A passenger who said he was seriously injured during the landing of a Southwest Airlines flight at New York's LaGuardia airport in 2013 has filed a lawsuit against the carrier. The suit filed by Kenneth Kochman in state supreme court in Queens County comes after another Southwest jet slid off a runway in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, injuring at least nine people.

Russian government agrees to bail out UTair Airline
The Russian government is stepping in to support UTair Airline with Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev signing a resolution guaranteeing RUB9.5 billion ($138.6 million) to help secure loans. UTair faced financial difficulties in 2014 due to economic changes and a decrease in passenger demand. It reported a 2014 net loss of RUB61.66 billion ($1.09 billion). In February 2015, it was announced the carrier could apply for state guarantees. UTair has since launched a cost-cutting program, reduced its fleet and capacity, and sold some of its subsidiaries.

Virgin Atlantic raises cash against Heathrow airport slots
UK-based long-haul specialist Virgin Atlantic has raised £220 million ($328 million) in funding by mortgaging some of its take-off and landing slots at London Heathrow. Slots at the heavily runway-constrained airport change hands for considerable sums, but this is the first time in Europe that they have been used in this way to raise funds. The money will be used to bankroll Virgin Atlantic’s long-term investment program, including new aircraft purchases.

Boeing raises protest of ‘irreparably flawed’ bomber selection
Boeing and Lockheed Martin have reaffirmed their objection to the US Air Force’s October award of the next-generation bomber development contract to Northrop Grumman, dismissing the lengthy source-selection process as “irreparably flawed”. The losing industry team on 17 December submitted a “133-page brief” to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), which is considering whether to sustain or deny Boeing’s formal protest of the Long-Range Strike Bomber (LRS-B) contract. The filing comes in response to an air force submission to the GAO.
