Airbus prepares to open first US A320 factory
Airbus will hold inaugural ceremonies in Mobile, Alabama, Sept. 14 as top executives and US dignitaries celebrate the opening of the company’s first US manufacturing facility. Celebrations for the new A320-family assembly-and-delivery facility will begin Sunday, Sept. 13 when the company briefs invited media, which will be given a preview tour of the factory.

Boeing is confident in future demand for 767
Boeing has received an order from FedEx for 50 aircraft and thus will boost production of the 767 by 25% in 2017. "We are confident the market will support a long-term future for the 767," said Boeing's Brad Zaback.

Air Transat adds service to European destinations
Montreal-based leisure carrier Air Transat will add Airbus A330 flights to Zagreb, Croatia and Pisa, Italy beginning mid-June 2016, boosting its direct European destinations to 29 cities. Sunday flights will leave from Toronto for Pisa starting June 13, with a stopover in Montreal. The airline will fly the Toronto-Zagreb route every Tuesday from June 15. The airline will also launch nonstop weekly Vancouver-Rome flights starting June 17.

American Airlines posted higher traffic in August
American Airlines Group posted a 5% increase in total revenue passenger miles for August on a year-over-year basis. The carrier also reported a 2.7% boost in capacity for the month, as well as a 1.9% rise in load factor.

Delta expands Minn. customer service center, adds 100 jobs
Delta Air Lines is celebrating the expansion of a customer service center in Chisholm, Minn. The $5.9 million project will allow Delta to hire more than 100 additional employees. "We want to do more investment in the facility ... expand and continue to grow," said Delta CEO Richard Anderson.

Delta loves New York with co-branded logo
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a tourism partnership with Delta Air Lines that will feature a co-branded logo for the carrier as part of the I Love New York campaign. "This new joint logo signifies Delta's commitment to this great state -- not only at our airports, but also in our communities, where our Delta team proudly lives and works," said Gail Grimmett, senior vice president, New York, for Delta.

FedEx flies supplies to storm-battered Dominican Republic
FedEx Corp. delivered around 6,000 pounds of relief supplies to the Dominican Republic, which was thrashed by Tropical Storm Erika. FedEx delivered the supplies from Heart to Heart International, a disaster relief agency based in Kansas City, Mo.

Gulf Air in talks over major Airbus order
Gulf Air is in talks with Airbus over a potential major fleet replacement order. Talks in Paris between the airline and manufacturer discussed future requirements for “up to 50” aircraft and looked at both narrow- and widebody types.

Startup Libyan Wings ready to begin operations
New Libyan carrier Libyan Wings plans to launch operations by “the end of next week,” CEO Edgardo Badiali told ATW Sept. 11. The airline has been attempting to get off the ground for some months, but has been stymied by the political turmoil in the North African country, which has seen several factions fighting to control the country. Several aircraft belonging to Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways were damaged or destroyed by warring groups at Tripoli International Airport.

United offers sneak peek of premium seats for domestic routes
United Airlines gave a sneak peek of its new premium cabin seats for domestic flights to members of the media on Wednesday. The leather seats feature a tray table that allows users to dock iPads and mobile devices in an upright position. The seats, designed by PriestmanGoode, will be installed on more than 200 narrowbody aircraft.

Vueling will hire up to 200 pilots as market demand grows
Spanish budget carrier Vueling has announced plans to hire as many as 200 first officers to meet market growth demand in the 2016 summer season. “We want to continue to provide professional opportunities to more pilots at our operational bases in Spain and elsewhere in Europe, as we have done in recent years,” COO Fernando Val said in a statement.

US Airways moves to American terminal at Calif.. airport
US Airways ticket counters have moved next to American Airlines counters in Terminal A of John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Calif. Next month, the US Airways brand will be fully incorporated into American Airlines because of the 2013 merger of the two carriers.

Smoke haze forces Malaysian, Indonesian airport closures
Dense smoke from burning rainforests has forced the closure of at least two Southeast Asian regional airports. Kuching International Airport (KIA) in Sarawak, Malaysia on was closed Sept. 10 due to visibility down to some 1,300 ft. resulting in the cancellation or diversion of several flights.

Eurofighter announces Kuwait selection
Kuwait has reached an agreement with the Italian government linked to the planned acquisition of 28 Eurofighter Typhoons. “We are delighted to welcome Kuwait as the newest member of our Eurofighter Typhoon family,” says consortium chief executive Alberto Gutierrez, who also describes the selection as providing “a great opportunity for further Eurofighter orders.”

Sikorsky CH-53K to fly ‘this fall’
The US Navy’s acquisition chief expects the Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion to take its first flight this fall, placing the long-awaited milestone somewhere between now and November. The super-heavy-lift helicopter for the Marine Corps has seen its share of technical troubles and delays, but the navy is still targeting an initial operational capability date of 2019.
