Airbus prepares for entry into service of A350-900
After gaining 370-minute Etops certification for the A350-900 earlier this month, Airbus continues preparations for entry into service with additional approvals such as in-cockpit Wi-Fi and A330 common type rating (CTR), while also expanding parts inventories near customer bases. Airbus has received regulatory approval for A330/A350 CTR, meaning that pilots current and qualified on the A330 can now start their instruction using only “differences training,” which does not call for a full-flight simulator. Airbus claims the approach reduces the training time by 65 percent, to only eight days, most notably because the two types share similar handling qualities, as EASA and FAA pilots recently verified.

Airbus To Launch US Assembly With A321

Airbus Americas President Barry Eccleston told an audience in Seattle that the European aircraft maker was switching the plans for the plant in Mobile, Alabama, to accommodate growth in orders for the larger plane. The first one off the line will be the A321ceo, or "current engine option" in April 2016, with A321neos, to follow later, he said.

Aeroflot will name its new low-cost airline Pobeda, or Victory, a symbol of defiance against Western sanctions over Ukraine that grounded the budget carrier's predecessor. Its aircraft lease agreement was cancelled under European Union sanctions because it flies to Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in March.

Virgin foresees firming 787-9 options and possible -10s
Virgin Atlantic intends to exercise its Boeing 787-9 options and is looking at the -10 variant as a potential replacement for leased London Gatwick-based 747s. Firming of the airline's four -9 options would bring its 787 fleet to 21 aircraft by the end of 2018, notes chief executive Craig Kreeger. "We have not exercised those last four options but we are communicating very clearly that we plan to," he says. Kreeger also discloses that a follow-on order for the largest 787 variant, the -10, is being considered as the airline proceeds toward a decision on how to adapt its fleet after leases on seven Gatwick-based 747s expire in 2019.

Aviation Quote

I've tried to make the men around me feel, as I do, that we embarked as pioneers upon a new science and industry in which our problems are so new and unusual that it behooves no one to dismiss any novel idea with the statement that "it can't be done!". Our job is to keep everlasting at research and experimentation, to adapt our laboratories to production as soon as possible, and to let no new improvement in flying and flying equipment pass us by.

— William E. Boeing, founder The Boeing Company, 1929.

Russian War College

At the Russian War College, the general is a guest lecturer and tells the class of officers that the session will focus on potential problems and the resulting strategies. One of the officers in the class begins by asking the first question,
"Will we have to fight a World War Three?"

"Yes, comrades, looks like you will," answers the general.

"And who will be our enemy, Comrade General?" another officer asks.

"The likelihood is that it will be China."

The class looks alarmed, and finally one officer asks, "But Comrade General, we are 150 million people and they are about 1.5 billion. How can we possibly win?"

"Well," replies the general, "Think about it. In modern war, it is not the quantity, but the quality that is the key. For example, in the Middle East, 5 million Jews have fought against 50 million Arabs, and the Jews have been the winners every time."

"But Comrade General," asks the panicky officer, "Do we have enough Jews"?

And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight. — E. B. Jeppesen
