In today's America?

You get the shaft

He sleeps under a bridge, washes in a public bathroom and was panhandling for booze money 11 months ago, but now Larry Moore is the best-dressed shoeshine man in the city. When he gets up from his cardboard mattress, he puts on a coat and tie. It's a reminder of how he has turned things around.
In fact, until last week it looked like Moore was going to have saved enough money to rent a room and get off the street for the first time in six years. But then, in a breathtakingly clueless move, an official for the Department of Public Works told Moore that he has to fork over the money he saved for his first month's rent to purchase a $491 sidewalk vendor permit.

"I had $573 ready to go," Moore said, who needs $600 for the rent. "This tore that up. But I've been homeless for six years. Another six weeks isn't going to kill me."

The bureaucrat told Moore that she found out about his business after reading about his success in this paper.

I've been homeless and working at the same time. The main problems are the cold and washing. Having a job is easy enough as long as the people don't know you're homeless. I managed to feed myself, pay for college, work, and keep my car running...and even post on the old ASO...all while being homeless. And only one other person knew about it. Was it pretty miserable? YES. But I read plenty of books, kept myself clean, and made the right decision. I could have begged money and crap, but I didn't. Instead, I chose to live with what I had, which was enough money to pay for food, one book at college (Classes were hard without the books.), showers, and fuel, but not enough for rent.

Oh, and actually the people at my college knew I was homeless and decided to cancel all of my financial aid. And then they told me maybe college wasn't for "my sort." But I showed them. Straight As again baby. {thumbsup}

Anyway, that's a long story. Hope that slut gets run over by a herd of gorillas.

Einstein said two things were infinite; the universe, and stupidity. He wasn't sure about the first, but he was certain about the second.

And there are others in similar situations, probably more than anyone thinks. Some of them are regional airline pilots.

Yeah, take it away from the person who needs it the most. Reminds me of a time in elementary school when my parents tried to get me on the free/reduced lunch program at school. I didn't qualify because my dad (who had is hours cut in half) made $10 too much per week.
