Feds spike voter citizenship checks in Georgia

Everything that would not belong anywhere else.

The Justice Department has rejected Georgia's system of using Social Security numbers and driver's license data to check whether prospective voters are citizens, a process that was a subject of a federal lawsuit in the weeks leading up to November's election.

There is no real law anywhere that requires proof of citizenship before voting in the US?!

Yes, we have a winner: Arizona :))
Arizona is the only state that currently requires you to prove your citizenship before you can register to vote. This may behard for students who don't have an Arizona driver's license, and you may want to make sure you have a way to prove citizenship well before the registration deadline. In order to prove your citizenship when you register, you must provide either: (1) a valid Arizona driver's license number on your application, as long as the license was issued after 10/1/96; (2) a photocopy of a U.S. birth certificate; (3) a photocopy of a U.S. passport; (4) a valid certificate of naturalization number; or (5) a Bureau of Indian Affairs card number, Tribal Treaty card number or Tribal Enrollment number. If you register by mail or through a voter registration drive, you'll have to enclose one of these with your registration form. If you register in person at the County Recorder'soffice, you can also show original naturalization documents

How do you figure that Arizona is the only state that requires proof?

Wisconsin requires a voter to produce a valid state ID or driver license to register to vote. And to get one of those, you must present a birth certificate. Therefore...

Florida does the same. If you're a non-citizen, you might be able to get a DL, but your status is noted on the license. In fact, non-citizens have to go to a different office to get their DL where they do verify immigration status with USCIS. My wife is a Canadian citizen so we've been through the process.

Texas requires a Drivers License, Birth Certificate, or voters registration card as ID to vote..

I never keep my registration card, they get all butt-hurt when I use my DL

I don't just cut and pasted from an article published before the last election. The requirement of showing valid ID at the polling place, has driven Arizona to all time highs in early voting. As long as the name is register to vote, there isn't any fool-proof way of making sure the early voter is actually the same person as is on the voting lists. In our last local election in March, 80% of the ballots casted were early voting.

I have nothing to add to the topic (don't make a joke) but I just wonder why the link is from the local paper here? Where'd you find it Sir Andes?
