How long are the batteries on these things supposed to last? I had mine for about 2 years and the power went out a few minutes ago and it didn't work. Battery lasted all of 3 seconds. Is this its normal life span? Should I buy a new one or pop this one open and replace the battery myself?

Usually, a UPS should last at least 30-60 minutes, so that you can controlledly shut down the systems in case of a power loss.

When I first got it It lasted 18 minutes with everything running, I timed it. Now, about 3 seconds

Yep, probably batteries. They generally last about 3 years, but it really depends a lot on the quality of the batteries themselves, how they are used, and the quality of charge the device maintains on them. If they are put to use frequently and discharged deeply, or the (cheap) device overcharges them and they heat up, they won't last as long.
