I would have expected such a thread/topic from our commuter in the know Train-Spotter MYT332, but not from you Mark ;)

Whats the story behind that?

I wounder what the other train driver was thinking.

The 3985 steam locomotive has pulled modern freight twice that I remember. Once was a string of auto carrier racks as a part of a publicity campaign. Regarding the container train, the story I heard is that they needed to move the cars from Cheyenne to North Platte, but didn't have diesels available. The 3985 was fired up and enlisted to do the job.

Union Pacific has used its classic fleet to pull freight at other times. I recall their EMD E-units pulling a container train a few months ago. Their #6936 EMD DDA40X locomotive has pulled a lot of freight and just did so a few weeks ago.

And I thought you would've hated them...

What's the carbon footprint of that thing?

(I would assume that regardless it is very little)

Union Pacific also has another smaller steam locomotive, the 844, which is getting a lot of use this past two years. 3985 is getting a major overhaul.

It would be nice if a private collector or museum would restore a Big Boy. IIRC, there are nine of them on display around the country.
