So, on 6/30 I'm heading to Seward on the Alaska Railroads new GoldStar Service. Premium dome seating, all the booze you can handle, rations, and the view . . . . weather will be left to whatever diety you decide upon. Been there done that before, the Seward trip that is, and have previously posted pics.
My Dad has been itching for a train ride. FFS he wanted to go to FAI and spend the night and then return the next day on the Denali Express this past summer. Praise *(insert diety) my schedule didn't allow it. Bad enough I'm confined in a 2B/2B condo with him when I'm home, a train and a hotel room would REALLY suck.
So we booked a Tuesday cause, although he said he'd pay for it, I did. And Tuesdays are 2-1 Alaskans Only on the AKRR. We'll leave 6/30. Problem is I can't get a rental car in Seward that day. Hertz is the only game in town, and they're booked.
So . . . . .
I got a U-Haul rental pickup. $19 plus .59cents a mile. Well, if you know Seward, you know that at best I'm good for 20 miles.
About the price of a remt-a wreck from the Hertz Franchise there . . . I'll break even.
So if you're ever in need of a short term rental . . . . and the rental car companies want to shove it to you, try this approach.
Works fine. U-Haul doesn't care what you're gonna haul, even if it's your own asses around town for a day.
LET'S GO BRANDON!!!!
