Help with installing a Hard Drive

Everything that would not belong anywhere else.

Ok.. I recently decided to add on a 1TB Western Digital hard drive to go with my 500GB Western Digital hard drive.

Both drives are SATA, and plugged in using SATA cables and SATA power cables only.

The 500GB drive shows in BIOS as being on EIDE 1 Master.. My DVD Rom is SATA, and on EIDE 2 as a slave. my new drive shows up in the BIOS on EIDE 4 as a slave.

There is a blank where the EIDE 3 SATA plug would be

This is all fine and dandy, the new HDD shows up in the BIOS just fine.. But Windows Vista detects the drive, and runs its little plug n pray hardware setup thingy for a minute.. It finishes.. So I go to my computer.. All my old stuff is still there, but not the new drive.

Ideas?

Go to computer management, disk management, and assign a drive letter to the drive.

What operating system?

It's only showing the original HDD in there, and the CD drive.

The new drive isn't in the list.

Why is your SATA 3 showing as 'blank'?

No clue.. The board came with nothing on SATA 3.. I think it has something to do with the RAID controller. It's an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe

I have a RAID 0 and RAID 1 SATA plugs on the board.

Try swapping your DVD and new HDD and see what happens.

I guess it's been mentioned, but did you format it for use?

Jumpers? (do they even use those anymore? It's been 2-3 years since I last built a desktop {crazy} )

It sounds to me like you might have an incompatability of some kind. How old is the motherboard, and have you gone to the ASUS website and downloaded the latest BIOS? http://support.asus.com/download/downlo ... uage=en-us

If it had Jumpers I would have kicked it over to be a master.. Everything has gone jumperless lately and is automatically set to cable select- which I hate.

It isn't formatted, in the past Windows would let you install a drive and format it through windows. I hadn't thought about messing with flashing the board BIOS. The board is only about a year old.

I swapped the DVD drive and the New HDD before I took my nap today with the same result- nothing. Both drives still showed up in the BIOS so I don't think it is a drive controller problem. I sat around waiting on Newegg to send me the drive cooler for so long I think I am out of the store return window.. So it looks like I'll be dealing with Western Digital if the drive is FUBARed.. I am already having nightmares about phone calls to New Delhi.

Yes, 1.5TB is a shitload of porn.. And games.. And whatever.

Not that this helps your situation...but I bought my current machine September of 2006. 1 TB HD. I've been ripping crap, saving random shit (interpret what you will), etc etc. Not deleting a damned thing, and I have yet to hit 500 GB. {sigh}
