Rest in Peace my brothers and sisters, your sacrifices are not forgotten.

SALUTE.

Saw a convoy at a local truck stop today when I went for my afternoon dose of 44-ounce Dew. I got to talking to them. They were a mechanical unit of some sort en route from Camp Ripley to Fort McCoy. A state trooper had pulled them over because a motorist saw something fall off a fuel trailer hitched to a FMTV being towed by a HEMTT wrecker. They were checking to see what they'd lost. Shook hands with the ones that were handy and thanked them for serving. Wished them a good weekend.

Every Monday-Friday, my commute takes me alongside Arlington National Cemetery. This afternoon, we stopped to watch soldiers placing American Flags at each headstone. Instead of just placing the flags quickly and moving on, these young soldiers were taking their time, stopping to read many of the inscriptions, and placing the flags with care - honoring the memory and the sacrifice of those who had gone before them.
A truly moving event.
At home in the PNW and loving it

Good points. It's often you'll find people don't remember the reasons behind the days they have off. Thanks to all the Veterans on this site for your service, it will always be appreciated. Salute

Thanks for posting those Miamiair..When I was growing up, it was a given that everyone (five boys) would serve in the military. -US Air Force, US Army and US Coast Guard were the services. Another group that should never be forgotten were the men that served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.

HEROES IN HEAVEN
Heaven's full of heroes, Who sacrificed their lives, In service to our country, So that liberty survives. Uniforms of blue or gray, Khaki or olive green, Skin of every color, Young and old and in-between.
They fought in many places, Spanning history and times. Flags wave in their honor still, In tribute, church bells chime. In cornfields of America, Or on Europe's distant shore, Pacific island paradise, Or Chosin Reservoir.
In blowing desert sands, Or in jungles' stifling heat, In Navy ships or in the air, Or Fallujah's dusty streets. It doesn't matter where they fell, Or if we know each name, What matters is to know, When their nation called, they came.
Grateful for their service, For the precious blood they spilled, For their sacrifice and courage, And the duty they fulfilled. Yes, heaven's full of heroes, Now part of history, We treasure what they gave to us, The gift of liberty.

It's days like this that I am truly humbled.

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. -Winstson Churchill, 20 April 1940
While this was said during WWII, the sentiment is actually timeless. Countless numbers of men and women have answered thier country's call to serve. Some gave the ultimate sacrifice, not for glory, not for fame, but so that others may live. To live in freedom and prosperity. It really puts things in perspective.
Make Orwell fiction again.

Yes, great movie. And I probably mischaracterize Sgt. York as being a "war movie", because it's so much more than that. As is Patton.
Slider... <sniff, sniff>... you stink.

My FAVORITE 'war movie' bar none.
I quote him quite often. And the things he says in that movie aren't too far off from the actual quotes he made in real life - read the books on Patton.
What America needs is someone like Patton running our military . . .
