January 22: Norwegian Air Shuttle is founded.
 
February 4: Russian space agency tests a 82' wide space mirror.
 
February 10: McDonnell Douglas delivers its 10,000th aircraft, a US Navy F/A-18 Hornet.
 
March 5: Palair Macedonian Airlines Flight 301 crashes moments after takeoff on runway 34 in Skopje, Macedonia. The Fokker F-100 (PH-XXL) failed to climb due to the crew’s failure to have the aircraft de-iced, killing 83 of the 97 aboard.
 
March 11: First flight of the Airbus A321.
 
March 25: The first woman Concorde pilot makes her first flight as First Officer of the daily supersonic London-New York route. British-born, Barbara Harmer, is one of only 17 co-pilots in the British Airways Concorde fleet.
 
March 28: Type II supernova detected in M81 (NGC 3031).
 
April 1: Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom reviews 70 Royal Air Force aircraft on the ground in celebration of the air force's 75th anniversary. A mass flypast is cancelled due to poor weather.

July 26: Asiana Airlines Flight 733, a B737-500 (HL7229) crashed in poor weather about 4 kilometres short of the runway in Mokpo while making its third landing attempt on runway 06 at Mokpo Airport. Two of the 6 crew members and 66 of the 110 passengers on board were killed.
 
August 14: Two B-1 Lancers complete a round-the-world trip in 47 hours.
 
September 10: Boeing finishes production of their 1,000th 747 airplane, 26 years after the 747 program was launched.
 
September 17: The F/A-18 Hornet logs its 2 millionth flying hour - achieved in only ten years of operations.
 
September 20: Erich Hartmann passes away. He was a German World War II fighter pilot and is the highest-scoring fighter ace in the history of aerial warfare. He claimed 352 aerial victories (of which 345 were won against the Soviet Air Force, and 260 of which were fighters) in 1,404 combat missions. He insists his greatest achievement was never losing a wingman.
 
October 26: ValuJet commences operations.
 
November 22: Qatar Airways is founded.
 
December 21: First flight of the Cessna Citation X.
