January 1: The 4200th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing activated at Beale AFB. Later (25 June 1966)it was changed to 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing.
 
January 20: JPL proposes modified Apollo flight to fly around Mars and return.
 
January 22: U.S. launches TIROS 9 weather satellite.
 
February 3: Orbiting Solar Observatory 2 launches into Earth orbit (552/636 km).
 
February 8: Eastern Air Lines Flight 663 flies from Boston to Atlanta and crashes near Jones Beach State Park in New York, killing all 84 souls on-board. The Douglas DC-7 (N849D) had just departed JFK (one of its stops along the way) and made a hard right turn to avoid a Pan Am 707, missing by only 200-500 feet. Unable to recover from its bank and becoming disoriented, the aircraft plunged into the ocean.
 
February 15: Mrs. Guy Maher arrives from Culver City, California to Medford, New Jersey in a Hughes 300 to complete the USA’s first transcontinental helicopter flight by a woman.
 
February 16: Pegasus 1 launched to detect micro-meteors.
 
February 17: Ranger 8, a satellite intended to take photos of the Moon to plan for the Apollo missions, launches.
 
February 19: Lufthansa signs up as the first customer for the forthcoming Boeing 737.
 
February 22: USSR launches Kosmos 57 into earth orbit (Voskhod Test).
 
February 25: The Douglas DC-9 makes its first test flight.
 
February 27: The world’s largest aircraft at the time, the Antonov An-22 Antei, makes its first flight. It is powered by four 15,000 EHP Kuznetsov NK-12 turboprop engines.
 
March 6: The first nonstop transcontinental helicopter flight across the United States — flown off the deck of the carrier USS Hornet at San Diego, California to the deck of the carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt off Jacksonville, Florida — is completed successfully. A U. S. Navy Sikorsky SH-3A Sea King flies 2,116 miles.
 
March 18: USSR launches Voshkod 2; Alexei Leonov makes 1st spacewalk (20 mins).
 
March 21: US Ranger 9 launched; takes 5,814 pictures before lunar impact.
 
March 22: Avianca Flight 676, a Douglas C-47 (DC-3) crashes into Sugar Loaf Mountain shortly after departure from Bogota-Eldorado Airport in Colombia at an elevation of 7,200ft. All 29 on the aircraft are killed due to the pilot continuing to fly by (VFR) Visual Flight Rules in unfavorable conditions.
 
March 23: Gemini 3 launched, 1st U.S. 2-man space flight (Grissom and Young).
 
April 1: NAMC YS-11 enters service with Japan Domestic Airlines.
 
April 1: Syncom 3, 1st geosynchronous communications satellite, passes from civilian to military control.
 
April 6: Intelsat 1 ("Early Bird") 1st commercial geosynchronous communication satellite.

May 5: Iberia Flight 401 crashes on its second approach to runway 30 at Tenerife, Spain. The Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation (EC-AIN), attempting landing in weather below minimums, strikes construction equipment while initiating its second go-around. Of the 49 onboard, 30 perish. Read more...

August 16: United Airlines Flight 389, a new Boeing 727–100, crashed into Lake Michigan 30 miles east northeast of Chicago's O'Hare Airport. The crew were told to descend and maintain 6,000 feet, which was the last radio communication with the flight. The NTSB was not able to determine why the airliner continued its descent into the water.
 
August 23: Air Wisconsin commences operations.
 
August 31: The Aero Spacelines B-377-SG/SGT Super Guppy makes its maiden flight.

September 28: An AIM-47 missile was fired from a YF-12A at Mach 3.2 flying at 75,000 feet. Themissile missed its intended target 36 miles away flying at 40,000 feet by less than 7 feet.
 
November 15: The 1st flight around the world over flying both Poles is made by U.S. airline Flying Tigerline Captain J.L. Martin, in a 707.
 
November 17: Venera Program: The Soviet Union launches the Venera 3 space probe toward venus, the first spacecraft to reach the surface of another planet.
 
November 26: In the Hammaguir launch facility in the Sahara desert, France launches a Diamant-A rocket with its first satellite, "Asterix-1" on board, becoming the third country to enter outer space.
 
December 14: A Learjet 23 executive transport shows off its impressive capabilities by climbing to 40,000 feet in 7 minutes 21 seconds with seven people aboard.
