1919: Designed and built by the Engineering Division of the U.S. Bureau of Aircraft Production, the first of four XB-1As (originally designated USXB-1A) makes its first flight at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio.
 
1929: Aeropostal, Alas De Venezuela is founded.
 
1936: The first C-class Empire flying boat built by Shorts as the S.23 design, makes a brief 14-min. first flight piloted by John Lankester Parker.
 
1942: First flight of the Martin XPB2M-1 Mars prototype BuNo 1520.
 
1950: Escorting strikes on Pyongyang by F4U Corsairs and AD Skyraiders, F9F Panthers of VF-51 flying from USS Valley Forge (CV-45) become the first U.S. jet fighters to go into combat. They shoot down two North Korean Yak-9 fighters; Lieutenant junior grade Leonard H. Plog becomes the first U.S. Navy jet pilot to score an aerial victory. It is the combat debut for both the Skyraider and the Panther.
 
1954: The first tethered flight by the Rolls-Royce Thrust Measuring Rig VTOL aircraft takes place.
 
1976: Three Israeli Air Force C-130 Hercules carry commandos to Entebbe, Uganda to rescue the 258 passengers of an Air France Airbus hijacked six days earlier. This is the operation Entebbe.
 
1981: The first international service with the Ilyushin Il-86 begins with an Aeroflot flight from Moscow to East Berlin, East Germany.
 
1984: Air Florida suspends all their flights after going bankrupt.
 
1988: USS Vincennes allegedly mistakes an Iran Air Airbus A300 airliner (flight 655) for a hostile military plane, shooting it down and killing all 290 people on board.
 
2005: Steve Fossett and co-pilot Mark Rebholz recreated the first direct crossing of the Atlantic by the British team of John Alcock and Arthur Whitten-Brown on June 14, 1919 in a Vickers Vimy biplane.
