Kona Airport KOA/PHKO was closed at 4:20 PM yesterday after a section of runway located approximately mid-field showed significant cracks and degradation. All inbound flights were diverted, primarily to Honolulu.

Overnight, repair crews milled and graded the approximately 10' x 10' section and the airport is scheduled to reopen this morning.

Look, it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down.

Looks like it will need a full resurface sooner rather than later, which could prove problematic on a single runway airport serving an island.
A million great ideas...

There was a planned runway renewal already on the books, scheduled to start at the end of the year, to be done in 5 stages, finishing in early 2026. There's now talk of bringing the start date forward.

We did ours in one, 78-day stretch. Given the elevation, not really an option to do it piecemeal. With enough bonuses on the line and a proven company, you can get this stuff done quickly.
