Dallas Executive Airshow

B17 and King Cobra. Appears the King Cobra intersected the B17 just forward of the tail section.

Splash two. . ..the King Cobra and the B17.

Due to my job, I've been witness to some very upsetting things. That video is very upsetting. {vsad}
Make Orwell fiction again.

I got a Facebook post from Dan Gaston to my original post when the news first came in:

This is way too close to home. I came really, really close to booking a flight on this today - Dallas was the last date on the calendar for Commemorative Air Force's B-17.

That made my hair stand on end, remembering how close Stefan and I came to drowning in Hamburg harbour back in 2009:

My friend and I applied for airline jobs in Australia, but they didn't Qantas.

Glad he didn't draw the short straw on that ride.

That video is hard to watch.

Dreadful tragedy for all involved. I have only seen these sorts of warbird displays from video, and all are in the US.

Having large and small aircraft operating in a fairly small area at the same time, does not leave much margin for error.
The fighters will be flying faster than the larger aircraft, and visibility from some of those warbirds is poor.

Sad news !
But good to read that our fellow Dan G. did not make it onto that plane that day.

Not sure, but I'd be surprised if he would have been on board during the actual airshow. That's generally a crew only function for safety as we now see is a smart call. The observation flights are usually before or after the days events.

This video offers more questions than answers. From the angle it appears that the P63 didn't start turning till just before impact and was approaching from the rear. Sure looks like the B17 should have been visible, even out of his peripheral vision, if he was keeping an eye on the fighter lead.

Where was the airshow traffic coordinator? He should have spotted the situation and told the the P63 to abort and break high.

Last, gotta feel sorry for the kid asking if that was supposed to happen. He'll be having nightmares for awhile.
What's the point of an open door policy if inside the open door sits a closed mind?

The NTSB has come out with its preliminary report on the airshow crash at KRBD.

According to the report, the air boss told the fighter formation to change to trail formation to fly in front of the bomber formation in the direction of the 500-foot show line. The boss told the bombers to fly down the 1,000-foot line. The report adds that the maneuvers were neither discussed preflight nor in the air.

That would mean, looking at the videos published so far, that the fighters would have somehow had to cross paths with the bombers to accomplish the directive from the air boss.

Meanwhile new video has surfaced that purports to show that the P63 collided with something just prior to the midair with the B17. It does show that before that the aircraft was probably a bit higher than the B17 and after the supposed foreign object hit descended into the B17. If it can be established that it was a drone, somebody, somewhere, could be responsible for the loss of 6 lives and two priceless aircraft, not to mention mental anquish experienced on differing levels by hundreds of people.

I have seen that video before, but not slowed down, I did notice something there even in real-time, but I thought it was a bird-I suppose it could be a drone of some sort, but we shall have to wait and see if anything else comes out about it.

I watched a video on you tube of a guy that explains air accidents, sorry I can`t recall the name.

His take on the NTSB report suggests the Airboss was new, and the son of the old Airboss, so experience, or lack of it, may well turn out to be a factor.
It would seem the Airboss told the fighters to switch to the 500ft line, and the bombers to the 1000ft line, so they had to cross each other.

As the report reviewer says in the you tube video that`s dangerous, different and dumb.

Also there seems to have been very little discussion in the pre-flight briefing about how the display would run. If I find the clip, I will post up a link, it`s worth a look, but bear in mind it`s nothing official.

Here is the clip, the guy speaks really fast , {bugeye} raises some interesting points.

A couple of pilots with P-63 experience have mentioned that it has the mother of all blindspots at around the pilots 3 to 5 o'clock. An unplanned flight-plan change requiring much visual input seems ill-advised at best.
